Victoria camping — every national park campground in one search
From the Alpine high country to the Great Ocean Road, plus Wilsons Prom and the Grampians.
105 campgrounds in our VIC catalogue
Victoria packs more variety into a small footprint than any other Australian state. Inside a long weekend's drive of Melbourne you can be camping in alpine snow gums (Falls Creek, Mt Buffalo), on Bass Strait surf coast (Wilsons Promontory, Cape Conran), in eucalypt ranges (Grampians, Cathedral Range), among mallee scrub on the Murray (Hattah-Kulkyne), or in old-growth Otways rainforest. The state's parks are managed by Parks Victoria through parks.vic.gov.au, and most popular campgrounds — Tidal River, Wilsons Prom; Halls Gap area in the Grampians; Johanna Beach in the Otways — book out months in advance for summer and Easter.
Tidal River in Wilsons Prom is the Goliath of Victorian camping. With over 460 sites it's the biggest national park campground in the country, and it still sells out every summer school holidays. A ballot opens for peak dates each winter; outside the ballot, regular bookings open about 6 months ahead. The Grampians (now also known as Gariwerd) has a cluster of popular bush campgrounds — Buandik, Smiths Mill, Stapylton — that fill up faster than people expect, especially during wildflower season and rock-climbing weekends.
Cancellations are the second chance worth waiting for. Plans shift, especially for trips that are months out, and the Parks Vic system surfaces freed-up sites back into general availability. CampWatch monitors Victorian park campgrounds and texts you when your dates reopen — no app, no account, just your number.
Region by region: the Alpine NP and surrounds (Mt Buffalo, Mt Hotham, Bogong) is summer hiking and winter snow country, with short windows of usable camping. The Great Ocean Road parks (Great Otway, Port Campbell, Lower Glenelg) are coastal forest and cliff-top sites that get smashed by Melburnians on long weekends. East Gippsland (Croajingolong, Errinundra) is the quiet wild — bigger drives, much less competition. The Murray (Murray-Sunset, Hattah-Kulkyne) is warm-night, big-sky country that locals love and visitors underrate.
Filter below by booking difficulty, facilities and what kind of trip you're planning. Every guide has the practical stuff — site numbers, check-in details, what to bring, what's nearby — plus a direct link to book on the official Parks Vic system.

FAQ
Camping in Victoria — common questions
When do Victorian national park campsites open for booking?
Parks Victoria opens bookings on a rolling basis, roughly 6 months ahead for most campgrounds. Tidal River (Wilsons Prom) has a separate ballot for peak summer dates that closes around July. Outside the ballot, sites are first-come, first-served once they're released.
Which Victorian campgrounds are hardest to book?
Tidal River (Wilsons Prom), Johanna Beach (Great Otway), Buandik and Smiths Mill (Grampians), Lake Catani (Mt Buffalo) and Wonnangatta (Alpine NP) are the consistent sellouts. School holidays and long weekends are when even quieter campgrounds fill up.
Is there free camping in Victorian national parks?
A small number of remote bush campgrounds in Victoria are free — generally walk-in or 4WD-access sites with no facilities. Most park campgrounds charge a per-night per-vehicle fee (typically AUD 25-45 in peak season), which goes back to Parks Victoria for site maintenance.
Can I camp at Wilsons Promontory without booking ahead?
Not at Tidal River — every site must be pre-booked. The hike-in sites at Sealers Cove, Refuge Cove, Little Waterloo Bay and Wilsons Promontory's overnight walks also require an advance permit. The Prom doesn't do walk-up camping.
