Tidal River Campground

Tidal River Campground is the main visitor hub inside Wilsons Promontory National Park and, with 484 camping and caravan sites, a very different experience from the park's tiny hike-in camps. You trade solitude for showers, nearby services, beach and river access, and the ability to start several walks without moving the car. In peak season, that convenience brings heavy demand and busy internal roads.

Choosing among 484 sites#

The official Tidal River Campground page describes two broad settings: sites among tea trees within a short walk of Norman Beach, and family-oriented sites nearer the calmer water of Tidal River. Powered and unpowered options accommodate tents, camper trailers, caravans and motorhomes, but every setup, vehicle, trailer and boat must fit between the numbered posts of the booked site.

Do not choose by site number alone. Review the current map and dimensions in the booking portal, accounting for awnings, drawbars and up to two vehicles. The minimum fee covers one vehicle; an additional vehicle can attract a charge. Six people is the stated maximum per site, including children.

Facilities listed by Parks Victoria include showers, barbecues and picnic tables. The precinct also has a visitor centre and general store. Powered sites do not have individual water connections, so bring a hose or containers appropriate to the shared supply arrangements and never discharge sullage onto the ground. The store reopened on 7 May 2026 and sells basic groceries, bread, milk, ice, gas and takeaway food, but opening hours vary.

Strict fire, pet and generator rules#

Campfires and solid-fuel heating or barbecue compounds are prohibited at Tidal River throughout the year. Use only permitted cooking equipment and check Total Fire Ban conditions before travel. Generators, drones, firearms and pets are prohibited. These rules are firm, not seasonal suggestions.

Keep food inside a vehicle or robust container. Wombats and wallabies regularly move through the campground, especially after dusk, and feeding or allowing animals to enter tents causes harm and creates future problems. Drive slowly inside the precinct and on the 30km park road, where wildlife crosses day and night.

The booking page lists check-in and check-out at 11am. Staff patrol permits, site occupancy and vehicle numbers. Quiet behaviour matters in a campground of this scale, with booking conditions calling for reasonable noise levels and particular restraint after 11pm.

Getting there and planning for peak periods#

Allow about three hours from Melbourne to the park, then another 30 minutes from the entrance to Tidal River. There is no fuel or EV charging in the precinct; fill or charge at Yanakie, Fish Creek or Foster. Temporary entrance works and park operations can create delays, so check the same-day change-of-conditions section before setting out.

Summer school holidays, Easter and Labour Day are exceptionally competitive, with bookings released first come, first served. Parks Victoria advises weekday travel where possible, carpooling, arriving before 10am for day access and bringing food and water in case of queues. Camp bookings allow no more than two vehicles per site.

A free shuttle runs between Tidal River and Telegraph Saddle during peak periods. Private vehicles cannot use the saddle carpark while it operates. Norman Beach, Mount Oberon, Squeaky Beach and the day-walk network are the big reasons to stay, but track closures and planned burns can change what is reachable.

• Wildlife encounters are routine, especially wombats after dark; secure all food rather than storing it in the tent.
• Amenities are generally regarded as clean and useful, but queues and wear rise with holiday crowds.
• Tea-tree sites feel more sheltered and beach-oriented, while open or powered areas can feel windier and dustier.
• The river is popular with young families, whereas beach access ramps can be steep and sandy.
• Many walks start from or near camp, reducing car use, but the 484-site precinct can still feel busy and noisy at peak times.
