Village campground

Village campground is the convenient, facilities-rich camping option on the western edge of Hill End Historic Site. Its 38 powered and unpowered sites are about 500m from the heritage village, with hot showers, drinking water and dog-friendly rules that make it very different from a typical national park campground.

Powered and unpowered site choices#

NSW National Parks lists 38 sites for tents, camper trailers, campervans and caravans. Powered sites are marked, while the unpowered camping area is less formal. The ground varies: parts are flat, other sections sit on a slope, and NPWS warns that tent sites are not always level.

Rig fit depends on the level you choose. Lower-level powered sites for small caravans are about 5m wide by 12m long; upper-level powered caravan sites are around 7m by 9m. Compare those dimensions with the full length and width of your vehicle, drawbar and awning before booking. Parking is at the campsite, and sealed-road, all-weather access is suitable for 2WD vehicles.

The amenities block has flush toilets, free push-button hot showers, drinking water and washing-up sinks. Powered pitches have their own tap and power, and bathroom power points can charge a phone. The block is locked; NPWS emails the access code before arrival, so save it offline.

Fires, dogs and campground etiquette#

Most unpowered sites and every powered site have a fire ring. Shared rings serve the unmarked camping area, and there is a free electric barbecue in the shelter. Bring firewood and obey any total fire ban. There are no rubbish bins, so pack out all waste.

Dogs are permitted, but this is not an off-leash campground. Keep them leashed, prevent disturbance and clean up after them. Dogs must stay at least 10m from barbecues and picnic tables; restricted and dangerous dogs are subject to additional muzzle requirements. Generators and amplified music are prohibited.

Mobile service exists around camp but can be intermittent. NPWS identifies signal boosters at the amenities block and Hill End Heritage Centre. The campground has accessible toilets, showers and picnic tables, though grass, gravel, slopes and the absence of formed paths may still require assistance.

Hill End access and current services#

Village campground is on Warrys Road just off Clarke Street. Check-in is after 2pm and check-out before 10am. Once established, you can walk roughly 500m into Hill End rather than moving the vehicle for every visit.

Do not plan around outdated advice that forgotten supplies can always be replaced in the village. At review time, the Village campground alert page said the general store was temporarily closed, with the closest fuel at Wattle Flat or Hargraves. The same page listed closures affecting Valentines Mine and Craigmoor. Check the live notices and buy essentials before the final drive.

Hill End can be cold: NPWS records average winter temperatures of 1–15°C and a historical low below -8°C. Pack for sharp overnight changes even when daytime weather looks mild.

What campers say#

Village has more public feedback than the remote sites in this batch. Recent Tripadvisor search results, Anycamp's Hill End listings and a public Facebook camping discussion commonly report:

• The walkable heritage-village location is the standout advantage, especially for a multi-day Hill End visit.
• Hot showers and powered sites add comfort, while the sloping or uneven ground makes pitch selection important for tents.
• Campers often describe the setting as quiet, with wildlife moving through, though busy weekends can feel less secluded.
• Phone reception is variable rather than absent; the official signal boosters are useful when the normal signal drops.
• Cleanliness is usually praised, but the access-code system means arriving with the email saved is essential.
