Wollomombi campground

Wollomombi campground is a compact bush camp beside the Wollomombi Falls precinct in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. Its 10 marked, unpowered sites suit tents, camper trailers, caravans and campervans, making it a practical overnight base for the gorge lookouts and walking tracks without the difficult 4WD access required by some camps deeper in the park.

This is still a low-service campground. There is one non-flush toilet, untreated water and no shower listed. The appeal is location: Edgars lookout and the falls precinct are close, while the campground remains small enough to feel simpler than a large holiday park.

Sites and facilities#

The official campground page lists 10 marked sites. You camp beside your vehicle, and the campground accommodates tents, camper trailers and caravans; NPWS also promotes it as suitable for campervans.

Facilities are limited to:

• one non-flush toilet
• unpowered, marked sites
• wood barbecues with firewood supplied
• car parking
• untreated water

NPWS says the available water must be boiled before drinking. Bring drinking water, a fuel stove, rubbish bags and warm layers rather than assuming the campground will supply more than the listed basics. A fuel stove is also the reliable cooking backup if fire conditions change.

Access from Waterfall Way#

Follow Waterfall Way from Armidale or Dorrigo, then use the signed turn for the Wollomombi Falls precinct. The final road is unsealed but officially listed as all-weather and suitable for 2WD vehicles. Parking is available at the campground.

Save the route, booking and the visitor information offline. Mobile reception is limited in the park, and severe weather can still affect a road that is normally classed as all-weather.

Falls, lookouts and walking#

Edgars lookout has an accessible cantilevered platform over the gorge and is the simplest nearby viewpoint. The Wollomombi and Chandler walking tracks offer longer options, with NPWS describing Chandler as the shorter but more challenging walk.

Waterfall flow is most impressive after rain, but wet weather also changes track conditions and visibility. Carry appropriate footwear and do not treat a short distance from camp as a substitute for normal bushwalking preparation.

The campground is also a useful birdwatching base. NPWS highlights wedge-tailed eagles, peregrine falcons and lyrebirds in the precinct, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

Fires, pets and current alerts#

Wood barbecues are provided and NPWS lists firewood as supplied. Total Fire Bans and local restrictions override normal use, so carry a fuel stove and check the current local alerts before leaving.

Pets and smoking are prohibited. When reviewed on 10 September 2026, there was no campground-specific alert, although another Oxley Wild Rivers precinct at Dangars Gorge remained closed for upgrades. Read the affected-location list rather than assuming every park-wide alert applies to Wollomombi.

What campers say#

Public campground-specific opinion is unusually sparse. One public camper video describes an enjoyable stay despite repeated rain and thunderstorms. That single report supports a few cautious planning points, not a consensus:

• exposed tablelands weather can dominate a stay even when the campground itself is appealing
• a small campground and nearby falls make this useful as a short touring stop
• wet evenings increase the value of waterproof shelter and a cooking backup

There is not enough accessible public material to make reliable claims about average noise, cleanliness, mobile reception or the best individual site.

Booking Wollomombi campground#

Bookings are required through NSW National Parks. The online system accepts up to 12 people or two sites; eligible school groups and Park Eco Pass holders can enquire separately. Check the live booking flow for current prices rather than relying on old campground directories.
