Freemans campground sits inside Munmorah State Conservation Area on the NSW Central Coast, roughly 1.5 hours north of Sydney. Walk five minutes through the bush and you are standing on Birdie Beach, a long stretch of golden sand that rarely feels crowded. With 39 sites spread across a shady, grassy clearing, it is one of the largest campgrounds on the Central Coast and one of the hardest to book.

Getting there#

Address: Freemans Birdie Link Track, Wybung, NSW, 2259

From Sydney (~125 km, 1.5 hours): Head north on the M1 Pacific Motorway, take the Doyalson Link Road exit, follow signs toward Munmorah State Conservation Area. Enter the park via Blue Wren Drive. All roads are sealed or well-maintained flat gravel. No 4WD needed. No public transport available.

Gate hours (locked after hours, no late entry):

  • 1 Sep to 30 Apr: 5:30am to 9:00pm
  • 1 May to 31 Aug: 5:30am to 7:00pm

Plan your arrival accordingly, especially on Fridays.

Choosing the best site#

Not all 39 sites are equal. For privacy: Sites 8, 11, 25, 28 have the most tree separation. For groups: Sites 15, 16, 17 near Birdie Creek. For space: Sites 1, 2, 3 are the most spacious (but near the entrance with more foot traffic). For caravans: Eight designated vehicle sites near locations 28-29 — the only sites accepting caravans and camper trailers. The remaining 31 are tent-only.

Sites to consider avoiding: Inner-circle sites (5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 29, 30, 31) are more exposed with less shade and separation.

Best time to visit#

Summer (Dec-Feb): Peak season. Birdie Beach at its best. Warm nights, full campground. Book early.

Autumn (Mar-May): The sweet spot. Water still comfortable into April, crowds thin, mid-week availability much easier.

Winter (Jun-Aug): Cold showers less appealing, but humpback whales migrate along the coast from June to November. Fewer campers, clear night skies. Gate closes at 7pm.

Spring (Sep-Nov): Wildflowers across the coastal heath, whale migration continues. Less competitive than summer.

Things to do#

Birdie Beach#

Five-minute walk from camp. Long, uncrowded surf beach for swimming, fishing, and body surfing. Northern (left) end is clothing-optional. Unpatrolled — swim with caution.

Snapper Point lookout and sea cave#

From northern Frazer Beach, walk along the rock shelf (~4.2 km one way, 1 hr 45 min). Dramatic coastal views and a large sea cave. Visit at low tide and low swell.

Moonee Beach trail#

4 km return (~1.5 hours) through scenic coastal heath to Moonee Beach. Wildflower display in spring.

Whale watching (Jun-Nov)#

Humpback whales migrate along the coast. Snapper Point, Wybung Head, and Tea Tree lookout are excellent vantage points.

Stargazing#

Low light pollution makes Freemans surprisingly good for night-sky viewing. The Milky Way is visible on clear nights.

Freemans vs Frazer#

Munmorah has two campgrounds. Freemans has 39 sites, better facilities, and easy walking distance to Birdie Beach. Frazer has ~10 tent-only sites right behind Frazer Beach — smaller, quieter, more secluded. Same fees, same walking tracks. If Freemans is booked, check Frazer.

What to pack#

  • Headlamp (unlit amenities after dark)
  • Power bank (no power outlets)
  • Gas stove (no campfires)
  • Earplugs (summer cicadas, close-packed sites)
  • Secure food containers (bush turkeys and ibis are bold)
  • Binoculars for whale watching (Jun-Nov)
  • Anti-microbial handwash (not provided in the amenities)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and insect repellent
  • NSW National Parks annual pass if you camp often — saves fumbling with the card machine at the gate
