Putty Beach is for campers who want a tent, sand and the Bouddi coastal walk in one compact trip. Its 20 pitches sit between Putty Beach Road and the shore, with town water, flush toilets and a cold rinse shower.
It is a poor fit for campervans, rooftop tents, long vehicles, hot-shower expectations or anyone who needs parking on the pitch. Those are not small caveats: the campground is tent-only and every setup involves some carrying from a public parking bay.
Best site means the right carry and tent fit#

- Small tent or solo/couple: sites 13 and 18 are the explicitly small options, capped at one small tent and three people.
- Larger family tent: use one of the other sites only if the individual footprint fits the tent, vestibule and guy ropes. A six-person booking limit is not a six-tent allowance.
- Shortest night-time toilet trip: compare sites near the eastern facility cluster around sites 1–3 or the western cluster around sites 17–19. The map shows relationships, not an accessible path guarantee.
- Less barbecue or day-use movement: avoid assuming a site beside a facility will be quiet; convenience and foot traffic are the same decision.
- Privacy or winter sun: one independent reviewer preferred sites 12 and 17 for separation and shade but found the trade-off cooler in winter. Treat that as one experience, not a guaranteed ranking.
The plan does not prove shade, level ground or a reserved parking bay. If those determine the trip, ask NPWS about the specific pitch before paying.
Arrival: park first, then carry#
Approach from Empire Bay via Wards Hill Road, The Scenic Road and Putty Beach Road. The road is sealed and suitable for 2WD vehicles, but NPWS says there is no long-vehicle access.
Small bitumen parking bays run along the campground road and a larger carpark is at the end. Arrive after the 2pm check-in, locate the booked site and a legal bay, then unload a compact first load. Do not block the road while deciding where the tent fits. Beach day visitors also use the area, so a campsite booking does not reserve the bay nearest your pitch.
Before setting up, check the toilet route, cold shower, barbecue shelter, tap and both beach exits. Keep the 10am departure in mind when planning the morning carry.
Comfort and rules#
The current visitor information lists flush toilets, town water, free gas/electric barbecues, picnic shelters and rubbish/recycling bins. Bring a drinking-water reserve even though town water is available.
The single shower is outdoor and cold: useful for rinsing sand, not for private hot washing. There is no power. Wood fires and generators are prohibited, as are amplified music and pets. Noise restrictions apply after 10pm. These rules favour a light, quiet tent setup and rule out several common vehicle-camping routines.
An accessible toilet exists, but kerbs, grass and the site-to-facility route vary. Confirm the actual pitch and path for mobility needs rather than treating the facility icon as proof that the whole stay is accessible.
Plan the coastal walk as a return problem#
The Bouddi coastal walk starts at Putty Beach and continues about 8km one-way to MacMasters Beach. A full out-and-back is a much bigger day; organise transport or choose a shorter turnaround.
For most campers, Gerrin Point or the Putty Beach–Maitland Bay section is the practical half-day. Carry water, leave enough daylight for the return and check track alerts. The beaches are unpatrolled and can have strong rips, so walking beside the ocean is not evidence that swimming is safe.
What campers say#
Across 12 visible Anycamp reports and Google material reproduced on Wanderlog from 2024–2026, recurring positives are clean amenities, fast beach access and the campground’s closeness to Sydney. Several reports also describe compact pitches and close neighbours.
One summer visitor found the nearest parking occupied by beach users; another reported late-night disturbance. Other stays were quiet, so neither is a universal condition. Anycamp questions repeatedly confuse “outside shower” with a private shower and ask about campervans—exactly why the official tent-only and cold-rinse distinctions matter.
Booking, value and alternatives#
Book the exact site and party through NPWS. Online group bookings can cover up to 20 people or 5 sites. The live camping quote, non-refundable booking fee and $8 per vehicle per day entry fee are separate components.
- Little Beach campground is smaller and more remote, with six tent sites and no drinking water; choose it for a quieter carry-in feel, not easier comfort.
- Tallow Beach campground suits a more remote beach walk-in, but lacks Putty’s town water and road-edge convenience.
