Bungonia campground is a large, unpowered bush camp in Bungonia National Park, about 30 minutes by road from Goulburn. Its 71 unmarked sites are suitable for tents, camper trailers, campervans and caravans. Hot showers, flush toilets, filtered drinking water and a communal camp kitchen make it unusually well equipped for a national-park campground.
The setting is still remote. Mobile reception is limited, sites have no power, and the park's steep gorge walks and adventure activities require proper planning. The campground works for a relaxed family base as well as hikers, climbers and experienced cavers.
Sites and campground layout#
The sites are unmarked, so there are no numbered bays to compare in advance. The official campground map is useful for understanding the access loop, facilities and parking before choosing a patch of ground. Several designated accessible parking spaces are provided.
Caravans and camper trailers are accepted, but unmarked does not mean every piece of ground is level or suitable for every rig. Arrive in daylight, keep clear of roads and shared areas, and leave reasonable space between camps.
Check-in is 2pm and check-out is 10am; late departure fees may apply. Quiet hours matter too: NPWS asks campers to keep noise down after 10pm and prohibits amplified music.
Facilities and fire rules#
The campground has flush toilets, hot showers, filtered drinking water, picnic tables, bins and recycling at the entrance, free gas or electric barbecues, and a communal kitchen with gas cooktops. The kitchen is enclosed and has gas heating during winter. A separate conference room can be hired through the park.
Sites remain unpowered, and generators are prohibited. Campfires and solid-fuel burners are also prohibited—there is no “fire ring if conditions allow” exception here. Use the provided gas equipment or a compliant gas or fuel stove.
Pets are not permitted. Mobile reception is limited, so download maps and emergency information before leaving coverage.
Getting there and what to do#
From Bungonia village, follow Lookdown Road to the national-park entrance. Register your trip intention at the campground office and read the notices, then continue past the office, take the first left and follow the road about 500m to camp. NPWS classifies the route as sealed, all-weather and suitable for 2WD vehicles.
The 6.7km Green track loop leaves from the campground and links woodland, gullies, rainforest and the park's main lookouts. The Lookdown overlooks Bungonia Creek Gorge and the Ettrema Wilderness; Adams lookout frames the limestone slot canyon.
Caving, canyoning and climbing are specialist activities, not casual extensions of a campground walk. Check park notices, seasonal cave restrictions and local conditions, and use appropriate experience and equipment.
