Chaelundi campground

Chaelundi campground is a seven-site bush camp beside Chaelundi Creek in Guy Fawkes River National Park. Tall forest, grassy sites and direct access to Escarpment walk make it attractive for families and 4WD tourers, but the remote approach and a current fire closure are decisive planning facts.

Current closure: check before travel#

The official Chaelundi alert page, last reviewed on 14 September 2026, says the majority of Guy Fawkes River National Park is closed because of fire activity. Do not enter a closed area or assume an available booking means the route is open.

Conditions can change after this article is published. Reopen the alert page and NSW Rural Fire Service information on the day of travel. If the closure remains, postpone the trip rather than trying an alternate forestry road.

Keep the booking flexible while a closure is active. An online calendar can lag a fast-moving emergency notice, and a cancellation alert is not a reopening notice. Save the local office details from the official page if you need confirmation, but never enter past a closure sign while waiting for a response.

4WD access and remote arrival#

NSW National Parks lists every access route as unsealed, 4WD-only and suitable in dry weather. The road can become boggy after rain. From the Dorrigo side, the final approach uses Sheepstation Creek, Chaelundi and Misty Creek roads; the official visitor page also provides approaches from Grafton and Ebor.

Download directions before leaving reception, fuel well before the turnoff and arrive in daylight. The campground has on-site parking, but vehicle access does not reduce the need for recovery gear and a conservative weather decision.

Allow extra time for the unsealed sections rather than using sealed-road estimates. If rain begins before the final turn, reassess early while there is still room to retreat. The 4WD requirement applies in dry weather too; it is not merely a wet-season precaution.

Sites, booking and facilities#

There are 7 marked, unpowered sites for tents and camper trailers. Book through the official campground page; online group capacity is up to 20 people or 5 sites, with larger groups directed to an enquiry.

Facilities include non-flush toilets, picnic tables, wood barbecues and fire rings. There are no rubbish bins, so carry everything out. NPWS says firewood supply may be limited and recommends bringing your own. Generators are prohibited.

Creek, walks and safety#

Chaelundi Creek can be used for paddling or swimming when conditions are suitable, but natural water is not supervised and can change after rain. The Escarpment walk starts near camp and leads toward Chaelundi Falls and Lucifers Thumb lookouts.

Mobile reception is limited. Download maps, tell someone your plan and carry a first-aid kit. Fire danger, storms and wet roads can affect both the campsite and the exit route, so keep enough supplies for a delay without remaining in a closed area.

Bring drinking and cooking water rather than treating the creek as a guaranteed supply. Keep soap and food waste away from the water, supervise children at the creek and use the marked walking routes. Rubbish, including food scraps, must leave with you.

What campers say#

Public campground-specific opinion is sparse. A Tripadvisor report describes mown grass among tall trees and a good link from camp to the Escarpment track. An older independent walking report calls the approach long and bumpy.

Those observations fit the remote character, but they are not evidence that the current road is passable or the park open. The dated fire notice and 4WD requirement on NSW National Parks control the decision.

Before you leave#

First confirm that the fire closure has been formally lifted. Then verify dry-weather access, book, bring drinking water, firewood, rubbish capacity and offline navigation, and leave a trip plan with someone reliable.
