Cascades campground is one of the quietest places to pitch a tent in southern NSW: just six unmarked sites tucked alongside the Tuross River in Wadbilliga National Park, with the Tuross Falls walking track leaving from camp. There's no fee to camp here (only the standard NPWS booking fee), no marked sites, and very little infrastructure — which is exactly why it's worth the drive.
Getting there#
Address: Tuross Falls Road, Countegany, NSW, 2630
Cascades sits in the inland edge of Wadbilliga National Park, between the Monaro tablelands and the Bega Valley. It's roughly an 85 km drive from Cooma (about 1 hour 30 minutes) via the Snowy Mountains Highway and Countegany Road, or an 80 km drive from Bega (about 1 hour 45 minutes) via Brogo and the Wadbilliga Road.
The final stretch on Tuross Falls Road is unsealed gravel and can be slow going after rain. Standard 2WD cars manage in dry conditions, but the road can deteriorate quickly with weather and may close during fire seasons or after heavy rain. Always check the Wadbilliga NP local alerts before driving.
The campground has limited mobile reception. Don't rely on phone navigation past Countegany — use a downloaded offline map or a paper Hema.
Location
Open in Google MapsSites and facilities#
Six unmarked sites suit tents, camper trailers, and "camping beside my vehicle" setups. Sites are spread along the river flat, so you can pick a spot when you arrive (it's first-come on the day for the actual position, even though the booking secures you a slot at the campground).
On site:
- Toilets (basic, non-flush)
- Wood-fire barbecue
- Picnic tables
- Carpark
Bring with you:
- Drinking water and cooking water (no tap water on site; the Tuross River runs alongside but should be treated before drinking)
- Firewood (collecting is prohibited inside the park)
- Fuel stove as backup
- Insect repellent — the river flats can be buggy in summer
Check-in is from 12pm and check-out is by 11am. The site cap is small (typically 6 people per booking).
Nearest town and supplies#
There is no fuel, food, or services anywhere near Cascades. The nearest practical supply runs are:
- Cobargo (~50 km, ~1 hour) — small village with a general store, fuel, and a pub. Good for a last-minute supplies top-up if approaching from the coast.
- Bemboka or Numbugga (~45 km, ~1 hour) on the Bega side — petrol and basic groceries.
- Cooma (~85 km, 1.5 hours) is the major town on the inland side — full supermarket, multiple service stations, hardware, hospital.
The pragmatic plan: shop in Cooma or Bega before you head in, and fuel up at Cobargo or Bemboka if you need a top-off. Once you're at Cascades, the next supplies trip is at minimum a 2-hour round trip on dirt road.
What to do at Cascades#
- Tuross Falls walking track leaves from the campground and reaches a spectacular viewing platform above the falls (about 2.5 km return, easy-moderate). The falls themselves are seasonal — strongest after winter rain, quieter in late summer.
- Cascades walking track is a shorter 800 m loop along the river to a smaller cascade.
- Swimming in the Tuross River is excellent in the warmer months. Deeper pools sit upstream of the falls.
- Kayaking and canoeing is possible on calmer river sections (no boat launch — it's a carry in).
- Platypus are sometimes spotted in the river at dawn and dusk; sit quietly along the banks.
Best time to visit#
Cascades is at altitude (~700 m) and the seasons are pronounced:
- Spring (September–November) is the sweet spot: the falls are still flowing, days are mild, and the wildflowers are out.
- Summer (December–February) is warm and the river swimming is at its best, but be aware of fire-season closures (Wadbilliga has been affected by major bushfires in recent years).
- Autumn (March–May) is dry and quiet — fewer crowds, comfortable days, cool nights.
- Winter (June–August) is genuinely cold here — frost, possible snow on the access road, and the access tracks may close.
Can't get a booking?#
Cascades has just 6 sites, so it's surprisingly easy to find yourself locked out for a long weekend or school holiday — the small site count means even modest demand fills it. Cancellations do happen, especially as people see the weather forecast.
