Airly Gap campground sits in a sheltered saddle between Mount Airly and Genowlan Mountain, on the western edge of the Capertee Valley in Mugii Murum-ban State Conservation Area. It's a remote, facility-free bushcamp 40 minutes north of Lithgow — no toilets, no water, no crowds — surrounded by the dramatic pagoda rock formations, historic shale-mining relics and clifftop views that draw walkers, mountain bikers and astrophotographers to this quiet corner of the Central Tablelands.
Getting there#
About 40 minutes north of Lithgow. Head north on the Castlereagh Highway, then turn onto unsealed local roads toward Glen Davis; the final approach is a dirt firetrail into the saddle.
- From Lithgow (~40 minutes) — sealed highway, then unsealed road for the last stretch.
- From Sydney (~3 hours, via the Great Western Highway through Lithgow) — the last 40 minutes is unsealed.
2WD vehicles can usually manage in dry conditions; after rain the firetrail gets greasy and a higher-clearance or 4WD vehicle is the safer call. There's no mobile reception once you leave the highway, and the walking here is largely off-track — buy a topographic map before you go and download offline maps.
Nearest town: Capertee (~20 km) for basic supplies and fuel; Lithgow is the closest full-service town for a proper shop.
Location
Open in Google MapsSites and facilities#
This is a genuine remote campground: there are no facilities at all. No toilets, no drinking water, no fireplaces, no picnic tables. Sites suit tents, camper trailers and caravans, and the saddle gives reasonable shelter from wind.
Bring everything with you:
- All drinking and cooking water — there is none on site
- A portable toilet or trowel for bush toileting per NPWS guidelines
- A gas or fuel stove — campfires are not permitted, and fire bans apply seasonally
- Rubbish bags — pack out everything you bring in
- Warm layers — frosty nights are common from autumn through spring
Bookings are required. Book online through NSW National Parks or call the National Parks Contact Centre on 1300 072 757; the campground is managed from the NPWS Mudgee office.
Camping fees#
A small per-person camping fee plus the standard NSW Parks booking fee applies — confirm the current rate when you book. There's no park entry fee: Mugii Murum-ban isn't a fee-collecting park, so you don't pay a vehicle-entry charge at the gate.
Fees are subject to change. Check the official NPWS Airly Gap page when you book.
Best time to visit#
The campground sits at altitude on the Central Tablelands, so seasons matter.
- Autumn (April–May) is the sweet spot — mild days, clear skies and the lowest rainfall of the year (33–66 mm/month). Cold nights set in, so pack for frost. Easter books out fast for a "quiet" spot.
- Spring (September–October) brings warming days, wildflowers and active wildlife. Snakes wake up from mid-September and fire season begins.
- Winter (June–August) is cold and frosty (3–5°C nights) but dry and clear, with the darkest skies of the year for stargazing and near-empty weeknights.
- Summer (December–February) is warm (24–26°C) with longer evenings, but storms can roll across the escarpment and a high Fire Danger Rating can close the park.
April, May, September and October are the most comfortable months overall.
Things to do#
- Pagoda walks — the beehive-shaped sandstone pagodas along the western edge of the plateau are the area's signature landscape. Most routes are off-track and exploratory rather than marked.
- Mount Airly and Genowlan Mountain — clifftop vantage points over the Capertee Valley, one of the widest enclosed valleys in the world.
- Airly Village and the Tramway Trail — historic relics from the area's shale and torbanite mining era make for an easy history-focused wander.
- Mountain biking and 4WD touring — the Mount Airly trail network is a well-known destination for both.
- Stargazing and astrophotography — dark skies and high, clear winter nights make this one of the better accessible dark-sky camps within reach of Sydney.
- Birdwatching — the woodland around the saddle is good for tablelands species.
Tips from campers#
- The saddle is more sheltered than the exposed plateau — pitch here and day-walk out to the pagodas.
- Carry far more water than you think you'll need; the nearest tap is back in Capertee or Lithgow.
- Check the park alerts before you leave — total fire bans and closures are common in summer and after heavy rain.
- Time your trip for a new moon if stargazing is the goal.
Pets#
Pets and domestic animals (other than certified assistance animals) are not permitted at Airly Gap or anywhere in Mugii Murum-ban State Conservation Area.
