Congo campground

Congo campground is a 29-site coastal campground in Eurobodalla National Park, close to Moruya but separated from town by forest, river and beach. It is aimed squarely at campers who want water on the doorstep: Congo Creek, two beaches, fishing, paddling, surfing and the start of the Bingi Dreaming track are all nearby.

This is a national-park campground rather than a serviced holiday park. Sites are marked and vehicles park beside them, but there is no power, no listed drinking-water supply and no permission for wood fires.

Sites, layout and current ground conditions#

The official listing allows tents, camper trailers and caravans. Each campsite is limited to one vehicle. Consult the official layout map rather than assuming every bay will suit the same rig.

There is an important current exception. A Congo campground alert, last reviewed on 7 September 2026, says sites 10, 12 and 13 have soft, sandy vehicle surfaces after dry conditions. NPWS recommends firmer parking ground where available and bringing ground, camp or annex matting to reduce bogging risk. Recheck the alert before booking one of those sites because remediation timing may change.

Facilities and rules#

Facilities include flush toilets, marked unpowered sites and a boat ramp. Bring all drinking and cooking water. The official listing does not identify showers, powered sites or a camp kitchen, so do not plan around third-party descriptions of those facilities.

Wood fires and firewood collection are prohibited. Bring a compliant fuel stove and check fire restrictions before travel. One generator per site is permitted only from 10am to 2pm, which preserves quieter mornings and evenings. Pets are not allowed, apart from certified assistance animals, and NSW national parks are smoke-free.

Mobile reception is limited in Eurobodalla National Park. Save your booking and map offline, and download the Emergency Plus app before the trip.

Getting there#

From Moruya, follow the Princes Highway to Bergalia, turn left onto Bingie Road, travel about 1km, then turn left onto Congo Road for the final 6km. Congo Road is unsealed but officially suitable for 2WD vehicles in all weather. South Head Road onto Congo Road is currently closed, so do not use a navigation shortcut through that approach.

The campground is close enough to Moruya for a final supply stop, but it is worth arriving in daylight. That gives you time to assess a sandy vehicle bay and position a caravan or trailer without disturbing other campers.

Beaches, river and walks#

The two beaches are not patrolled and can have strong rips. Swim at a patrolled beach where possible, watch children closely and check current conditions. Congo Creek and the river edge also require normal open-water caution.

The 14km Bingi Dreaming track starts at the campground and runs to Tuross Head. Shorter out-and-back sections are possible. A standing NPWS warning notes that openings at coastal lakes and lagoons can make parts of the route impassable, particularly at Coila Lake, so check current alerts before committing to the full walk.

What campers say#

Public material is useful but not detailed enough to support claims about every site. A Congo walk-through video, another independent camping report and a public traveller post repeatedly emphasise:

• The river-and-beach setting is the main reason to stay, rather than resort-style facilities.
• Campers value being able to move between creek, beach and campsite without driving.
• The area can feel lively when busy; marked sites and one-vehicle limits make thoughtful setup important.
• Older third-party reports conflict on facilities and booking, so the current NPWS listing should override them.
