Alexanders Hut campground

Alexanders Hut campground is one bookable campsite at the forest edge in South East Forest National Park. The naturally treeless frost hollow, grassy camping area and historic cattleman's hut make it feel secluded, but “one campsite” means exactly one group—not one formal pad surrounded by overflow space.

One site for one group#

NSW National Parks allows up to six people on the single marked site. Camping types are tent, camper trailer and camping beside your vehicle. The booking page currently lists no camping charge but a booking fee; check the live amount rather than relying on a saved price.

The hut itself is for day use and emergency shelter only. Do not plan to sleep inside, store gear there or treat it as part of the booked accommodation. Set up on the marked grassy campsite and leave the historic structure available for its intended purpose.

Read the official Alexanders Hut page before booking. If the only site is unavailable, choose another campground rather than arriving in hope of an informal second space.

Road access#

The campground is in the Tantawangalo area. From Nimmitabel, NPWS directs visitors via Snowy Mountains Highway, Monaro Highway, New Line Road and Packers Swamp Road. From Bombala, the route uses Mount Darragh Road and Tantawangalo Mountain Road. Brown-and-white signs lead to the hut.

The road is unsealed. A 2WD is suitable in dry conditions, but NPWS requires a 4WD in wet weather. Parking is next to the campsite. Recheck the forecast and local alerts before entering; a dry-weather rating is not a promise after rain.

Plan to arrive in daylight. The final approach passes through forest and rural roads where a missed turn is harder to correct after dark. Carry enough fuel for the return and avoid treating the historic hut as a source of supplies, accommodation or guaranteed emergency support.

Water, toilets and fires#

Bring all drinking and cooking water. Facilities are limited to a non-flush toilet, picnic table and fire ring on an unpowered marked site. There are no rubbish bins, so plan to pack out food scraps, packaging and hygiene waste.

Bring your own firewood if current rules permit a fire. Do not collect timber in the park, and carry a fuel stove so dinner does not depend on weather or fire restrictions. The open frost hollow can be colder than nearby forested slopes, making warm bedding and a dry layer important outside winter as well.

There is no official claim of campground mobile coverage. Download the route, booking and visitor information before leaving reliable service, and tell someone when you expect to return.

Horses, walking and wildlife#

Horse camping is allowed only with a permit from the Bombala office. Riders must follow the park horse-riding code and should confirm where animals, vehicles and equipment can stand without expanding beyond the one booked site.

For other visitors, the appeal is simple: quiet forest-edge camping, birdwatching, picnicking and exploring the surrounding roads and tracks. The historic hut is a point of interest, not a cabin stay. Keep food secure, give wildlife space and avoid trampling the wettest parts of the frost hollow.

What campers say#

Public campground-specific opinion is too sparse to claim a pattern. The Fold's public listing currently shows no reviews, while other accessible listings largely repeat official tourism copy. There is no defensible public consensus on mobile reception, insects, shade or road difficulty, so the guide relies on current NPWS access and facility information.

Booking checklist#

Reserve the single site, confirm the road is dry enough for your vehicle, and bring water, food, rubbish capacity and a weather-independent stove. Horse campers need the separate permit.
