Illaroo campground

Illaroo campground is a large beachfront campground at Minnie Water in Yuraygir National Park. Its 70 marked sites are divided between northern and southern sections, giving campers direct access to Illaroo-Sandon Beach, drinking water and basic facilities without the density or services of a holiday park.

North and south camping areas#

NSW National Parks lists 70 marked, unpowered sites suitable for tents, camper trailers, campervans, caravans and motorhomes. The northern and southern sections each have parking, toilets and water. A shallow depression separates them and can become a creek after heavy rain, so the two areas may feel less connected in wet conditions.

Most of camp is flat and step-free over grass or hard-packed ground. Accessible non-flush toilets sit on bitumen paths in both sections. However, the path linking north and south includes two sets of 12 steps, and every beach-access path has steps. Campers with mobility needs should study the official site layouts before booking a specific pitch.

There are picnic tables, rubbish bins, wood fire rings and free gas or electric barbecues. Firewood can be bought at camp or in Minnie Water; do not collect timber in the park. There are no showers, generators are prohibited and beach fires are not allowed.

Getting there and preparing#

From Grafton, NPWS directs drivers southeast on the Pacific Highway, then along Eight Mile Lane and Wooli Road to Minnie Water Road. In Minnie Water, follow signs onto Illaroo Road; camp is just over 2km farther. NPWS lists sealed-road, 2WD access, but warns the road can become boggy in rain. Accessing the beach itself requires a suitable 4WD and separate attention to park rules.

Check in is 2pm and check out is 10am. Bring a booking confirmation, insect repellent and a fuel stove. Mobile reception is limited across Yuraygir National Park, so download directions and alerts before leaving reliable service. Minnie Water has basic supplies close by; Wooli is about 15 minutes away and Grafton roughly an hour.

Beach safety and nearby walks#

Illaroo-Sandon Beach is unpatrolled. NPWS specifically warns of dangerous rips, sudden drop-offs and unexpected large waves. The closest patrolled swimming area is at Minnie Water, and conditions there still need to be checked on the day. Fishing from beach or rocks requires a current NSW recreational fishing licence and cautious site selection.

Angophora Grove walking track starts near camp and can be linked with Rocky Point walking track for coastal views and seasonal whale watching. The longer Yuraygir coastal walk also passes Illaroo, which makes the campground useful to through-hikers as well as vehicle campers. Do not assume coastal river crossings or beach sections are safe without checking tides and current conditions.

What campers say#

Recent campground-specific reviews are limited, but Illaroo appears in detailed public accounts. A collection of Illaroo reviews, Yuraygir National Park reviews and 2024–25 coastal-walk reports suggest:

• Most sites are close to the beach, but the outlook, shade and amount of shelter vary by position.
• Campers value the grassy, generally level ground and easy access to long beach walks.
• Mosquitoes can be intense after wet weather; reports vary greatly by season.
• Goannas and other wildlife investigate food, so sealed storage matters even during the day.
• The water and toilets are useful for hikers, while the absence of showers remains the main comfort trade-off.
