Rummery Park campground

Rummery Park campground is a small rainforest-edge base for walking, cycling and horse-riding routes in Whian Whian State Conservation Area and adjoining Nightcap National Park. Eighteen marked sites provide a more organised layout than a remote bush clearing, but there is no water, shower, rubbish service or campground mobile reception.

Sites, booking and arrival#

The 18 unpowered sites accommodate tents, camper trailers and caravans. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, and two communal fire pits are available. Parking for one vehicle per booking is in the campground carpark.

Book before entering the park: NSW National Parks says mobile coverage is only available at signposted points on Minyon Drive, 3.5km east, and Nightcap Range Road, 2km south. Check-in is after 2pm and check-out is before 10am. Save the booking, map and official Rummery Park page offline.

Online bookings cover up to 12 people or two sites. Larger or organised groups need the separate group-enquiry process rather than splitting an oversized party across casual bookings.

Road access and weather#

The campground can be approached from Rosebank via Minyon Drive or from Dunoon via Nightcap Range Road. Both routes are signposted. Peates Mountain Road's former link to Gibbergunyah Range Road is closed and gated at Rummery Park, so old through-route directions may be misleading.

NPWS lists 2WD access on unsealed roads but warns that the road can become boggy in rain. Check the forecast and local alerts, particularly after heavy North Coast weather. A vehicle rating does not guarantee that a wet road is open or sensible to use.

Water, fires and supplies#

Bring all drinking and cooking water. There are non-flush toilets, but no showers or rubbish bins. Take every bag, food scrap and item of packaging home. Basic supplies are available at Bexhill and Clunes, about 30 minutes away, so arrive with the essentials rather than planning a quick campground shop.

Bring firewood if you intend to use a ring and current fire rules permit it. Carry a fuel stove as the dependable option because total fire bans and local restrictions override the presence of a fireplace.

The rainforest setting can stay damp after rain. Pack a groundsheet, ventilation for the shelter and dry storage for bedding. Leeches and insects are plausible in wet forest conditions, but public evidence is not consistent enough to promise when they will be present; repellent and routine checks are sensible.

Walks and swimming#

Rummery Park connects naturally with Boggy Creek walk and the broader trail network around Minyon Falls and Nightcap National Park. Cooler autumn and winter conditions suit longer walks, while swimming in Boggy Creek is a popular warm-weather activity. Assess creek flow after rain and avoid treating a familiar swimming spot as automatically safe.

The campground is also valued for birdwatching and the sound of the forest. Keep noise low, especially early and late, and store food securely so wildlife does not learn to visit sites.

Public traveller evidence is useful but limited rather than a broad review consensus.

Book while you still have reception, bring water and fire-safe cooking equipment, and save the route. Recheck rain, road and alert conditions before committing to the unsealed approach.
