Sheepstation Creek is the westernmost campground in Border Ranges National Park and one of the most rewarding rainforest camps in northern NSW. Twenty-five sites sit among World Heritage-listed Gondwana rainforest, with raised camping decks, three walking tracks leaving from camp, and some of the densest wildlife you'll see anywhere on the Tweed Range. It's quieter than the better-known Forest Tops campground further into the park, which is part of why it books out so fast.

Getting there#

Address: Sheepstation Creek Road, Border Ranges, NSW, 2474

Sheepstation Creek is reached from the western side of the park, via Wiangaree. There's no through-road from the eastern (Tweed Range Scenic Drive) side that's caravan- or bus-friendly — that route is too narrow for towed vehicles.

Driving from Sydney or the south coast: Take the Pacific Motorway (M1) north past Coffs Harbour and Ballina, then turn inland to Casino and Kyogle. From Kyogle, head north on the Summerland Way for 14 km to Wiangaree.

At Wiangaree: Turn right (east) into Lynches Creek Road. Follow it for about 9 km, continue 1.3 km past the first junction, then turn left into Forest Road. Continue 4.2 km along Forest Road to the park boundary. The campground entrance is shortly inside the park on the left.

The total drive from Wiangaree is roughly 20 km of mostly unsealed gravel road. It's drivable in a 2WD car in dry conditions, but heavy rain can leave the road soft or rutted enough to need a high-clearance vehicle. Always check current road conditions with the NPWS Kyogle office on 02 6632 0000 before heading up after wet weather.

If you're towing a caravan, the western (Wiangaree) approach is your only option. The Tweed Range Scenic Drive from Murwillumbah is ruled out for caravans and buses.

Nearest town and supplies#

This is the question almost every booking-stage searcher wants answered, so here it is plainly:

  • Wiangaree (≈20 km, ~30 min drive) is the closest village, but it's tiny — a few houses, a hall, and not much else. No groceries, no fuel, no cafe. Don't plan on picking anything up here.
  • Kyogle (≈35 km, ~50 min drive) is your real "nearest town" for everything you need: a Foodworks supermarket, a couple of bakeries, IGA, a butcher, two service stations (24-hour fuel via card at the Caltex), and several pubs and cafes for a meal in or out. There's also an NPWS office in Kyogle if you have last-minute questions.
  • Casino (≈80 km, ~1h 15min drive) is the next-largest centre south, useful only if Kyogle is closed when you pass through (rare, but worth noting if you're arriving late).

The pragmatic plan: do your full grocery shop in Kyogle on the way up. Once you're at the campground, the next supplies run is at minimum a 90-minute round trip on gravel roads. Most weekend campers bring everything they need for the full stay.

Sites and facilities#

There are 25 campsites at Sheepstation Creek, including a small number of raised camping decks (5 m × 3.5 m, suitable for most 2- to 4-person tents and equipped with tie-down points). The remaining sites are ground sites suitable for tents, camper trailers, caravans, motorhomes, and "camping beside my vehicle" setups.

On-site facilities:

  • Toilets, including a wheelchair-accessible toilet
  • Picnic tables
  • Wood-fire barbecue facilities (bring your own firewood)
  • Marked, unpowered sites

Not on site:

  • No showers (closest are at Kyogle's caravan park if you're desperate)
  • No drinking water — bring your own
  • No phone reception

What you need to bring: drinking water, cooking water, firewood, rope (if using a tent deck), and a torch or headlamp — the rainforest canopy makes the campground genuinely dark at night.

Sites are bookable up to six months in advance via the NSW NPWS booking system. Park entry costs $8 per vehicle per day on top of the camping fee.

Walking tracks from camp#

Three walks leave directly from the campground:

  • Palm Forest walking track — easy, suitable for children, around 800 m return through subtropical rainforest to Brushbox Falls lookout. The classic "you've just arrived, stretch the legs" walk.
  • Rosewood loop — moderate, about 6 km return through mature rosewood and flooded gum forest. Half-day walk.
  • Booyong walking track — a longer day walk through majestic booyong trees. Connects through to Forest Tops campground further into the park if you want a one-way hike with a car shuffle.

Wildlife is exceptional at all three: red-necked pademelons, brush turkeys, and a long list of rainforest birds (Albert's lyrebird, regent bowerbird, paradise riflebird) are all regulars. Dawn and dusk along the Rosewood loop are particularly good.

Best time to visit#

The Border Ranges sit at altitude (the campground is around 600 m above sea level), which means summer is mild but wet — the rainforest gets serious afternoon downpours from December through March, and access roads can close after big storms. Autumn (April–May) and spring (September–November) are the sweet spot: cool nights, dry days, and the rainforest at its most photogenic. Winter (June–August) is genuinely cold here — bring a four-season sleeping bag and expect frost on a clear morning.

Avoid school holidays unless you've booked months ahead. Long weekends, summer school holidays, and Easter all fill up almost immediately when bookings open.

Can't get a booking?#

Sheepstation Creek is one of the harder Border Ranges campgrounds to land in peak season — the combination of camping decks, rainforest setting, and small site count (just 25) means popular weekends often book out the day they're released. Cancellations do happen, but you'd need to be checking the NPWS booking system constantly to catch them.
