Cutters Camp campground

Cutters Camp campground is a small forest base in Mebbin National Park, west of Murwillumbah. Its 20 marked sites suit tents, camper trailers and caravans, while the Byrrill Creek walking track starts from camp. The appeal is cool forest, wildlife and a quiet base for walking or riding; the trade-offs are a remote approach, no showers and limited services.

Sites and facilities#

The official campground page lists 20 marked, unpowered sites. Standard sites accept tents, camper trailers and caravans, including camping beside your vehicle. The separate Barracks group area is unmarked and tent-only, so confirm which product appears in your booking before choosing equipment.

Facilities include toilets, picnic tables, wood and gas barbecues. There are no showers or rubbish bins. NPWS says some water is available but must be treated or boiled; bringing your own drinking water avoids depending on its condition or supply. Pack out every scrap of rubbish.

Bring firewood and a fuel stove. Do not collect fallen timber, and use only the provided fireplaces when fires are permitted. Total fire bans and park closures override any normal campground arrangement.

Access and supplies#

Cutters Camp is remote from major services. Fill up and buy food, drinking water and firewood before the final approach; Tyalgum and Uki have only limited supplies. Check in is after 2pm and check out is by 10am.

Road accounts vary sharply because grading, storms and traffic change the surface. Some visitors reach camp carefully in ordinary vehicles, while others report deep potholes, ruts and narrow passing points. That disagreement is a reason to check the current NPWS alerts, not proof that every vehicle will be fine. As checked on 14 September 2026, NPWS showed no current alert for Cutters Camp itself. Allow extra time, arrive in daylight and reconsider after heavy rain.

Mobile service may be weak. Save directions and your booking offline, and do not count on completing an online booking at the gate.

What to do from camp#

Byrrill Creek walking track begins beside the campground and descends through subtropical forest toward the creek. It is the signature short outing and a good way to see the vegetation that makes Mebbin distinct from an open coastal campground. Creek levels, swimming suitability and leeches can change after rain; assess conditions rather than assuming a review from another season still applies.

Mebbin also permits mountain biking and horse riding on designated trails. Keep to signed routes and give way appropriately. Around camp, birdwatchers may see large forest owls, pademelons, wallabies, lace monitors and kookaburras. Secure food and never encourage wildlife into the site.

What campers say#

Public comments are consistent about the forest setting but mixed on the road. A collection of public Cutters Camp reviews and two Campertunity reviews suggest:

• Many campers find the marked sites spacious, generally level and oriented toward the forest.
• Clean toilets, sheltered barbecue areas and fire facilities are repeatedly praised, although their condition can change.
• The atmosphere is usually quiet, with birdlife and nocturnal wildlife close to camp.
• Road reports range from manageable to very rough; narrow sections and potholes are the recurring surprise.
• Limited reception and distance from supplies reward downloading maps and arriving fully stocked.
