Janes Bay Campground

Janes Bay Campground is a remote coastal camp beside the Cloates Sanctuary Zone of Ningaloo Marine Park. Its 29 sites are simple gravel pads at varying distances from the beach. The setting rewards capable, self-contained four-wheel-drive travellers; there are no toilets, showers, drinking-water taps or bins.

A genuine soft-sand 4WD approach#

DBCA places Janes Bay 77 kilometres north of Coral Bay and requires a high-clearance four-wheel drive with low-range gears. The official campground page tells drivers to reduce tyre pressure for the soft-sand access track and warns there is no reinflation facility on exit.

Carry a compressor, recovery boards and rated recovery points, and travel with the skills to use them. Check weather and alerts before leaving the highway, allow daylight for the approach and download maps and booking records while connected. A campsite reservation is not evidence that the track suits your vehicle or experience that day.

Twenty-nine sites, almost no facilities#

The campground has 29 unpowered compacted-gravel sites. Pads vary in size and distance from the beach, so compare the map and vehicle limits rather than relying on a generic “caravan-friendly” label.

The chemical-toilet dump point is the only facility. Every party must bring an approved portable self-contained toilet, all drinking and washing water, shade, rubbish storage and enough food, fuel, medication and first aid supplies for remote travel. Take all waste out and use the dump point correctly.

Generators are permitted, but considerate placement and timing still matter in an open campground. Campfires may be used only when conditions permit and only in a portable, self-contained fire ring; bring firewood and check Emergency WA immediately before lighting anything.

Beach use, dogs and safety#

The beach can be used to launch small boats and kayaks by 4WD. Shore-based fishing is allowed in the special-purpose zone, while the adjacent sanctuary has stricter protections. Check the current marine-zone map before fishing or collecting anything.

Dogs are allowed on leash. DBCA conducts ongoing 1080 baiting, which is lethal to pets, so keep dogs close and prevent scavenging. Summer heat, cyclone season from November to April and year-round remoteness make water and communication planning essential.

Booking Janes Bay#

Bookings are essential through Park Stay WA. Ningaloo Coast inventory currently opens in monthly releases on the first Tuesday at 10am AWST. Confirm the live release notice rather than assuming a rolling daily window.

There is no park-entry fee for Nyinggulara National Park, but per-person camping fees apply. Save the confirmation offline and arrive at the site you booked; swapping pads can disrupt another reservation.

What campers say#

Public campground-specific evidence is limited. An independent Janes Bay guide and a public traveller post provide only a few qualified planning clues:

• Travellers describe a rough approach that feels longer and more demanding than the map suggests.
• The open coastal sites offer sea views but can also be windy and exposed.
• The appeal is an off-grid, low-infrastructure stay; campers who want amenities or easy road access may be happier elsewhere.

Older public guides sometimes report 17 sites or no facility at all. Current DBCA information governs: 29 sites and a chemical-toilet dump point, with no toilets or water.

If your dates are unavailable#

Compare Point Billie, North Lefroy and South Lefroy by track conditions, site size, dog rules and exposure. CampWatch can monitor supported Janes Bay dates for cancellations, but keep a separate access-ready fallback because a newly available site does not reduce the four-wheel-drive requirements.
