Denison campground is a simple, bookable base in the Selwyn area of northern Kosciuszko National Park, near Adaminaby and Eucumbene Dam. Its value is location rather than amenities: the current NSW National Parks page promotes summer fishing and lists unpowered sites, but does not promise drinking water, showers or a broad facility set.
Booking and site expectations#
Use the official Denison campground page to search availability. NSW National Parks allows online bookings for up to 20 people or 5 sites; larger groups need a separate group enquiry.
The official visitor information only guarantees unpowered sites. That is an important limit: do not plan around a third-party amenities list or assume that toilets, paper, bins, tables, fire rings or potable water will be usable on arrival. Pack a self-sufficient setup and open the current factsheet when booking.
Because NPWS does not publish a fixed site count or marked-site plan on the current page, keep the booking confirmation available offline and stay within the area allocated to your party. Avoid spreading into extra clearings just because the campground looks open. A smaller setup leaves more room to adapt if the ground is damp or wind direction changes.
Access, seasons and alerts#
Denison is reached from the Snowy Mountains Highway in the Selwyn area. The broader area is open year-round, but NPWS warns that weather and park management can close roads and trails, and that some Selwyn campgrounds close in winter. Winter entry charges also apply on Link Road.
The Denison local-alert page showed no campground-specific alert when checked on 28 September 2026, but nearby closures and pest-control notices can still matter to a route. Recheck immediately before travel rather than treating that dated check as an all-clear.
Water, weather and packing#
Carry all drinking and cooking water, food storage, rubbish capacity, toilet paper, a fuel stove and clothing for a sharp temperature change. A forecast for Adaminaby does not remove the risk of cold or wind at an exposed high-country camp.
Do not make a campfire central to cooking. The official page currently shows a fire ring in its imagery, but fire availability and rules can change with conditions. Carry a fuel stove, check the fire-danger rating and obey any total fire ban. Leave no food scraps that could attract wildlife.
NPWS recommends telling someone your route and return time. Its Denison page links a trip-intention form and notes that personal locator beacons can be hired free from several Snowy Mountains visitor centres. Download offline maps before leaving coverage and keep the final route in your check-in message.
Fishing and things to do#
Eucumbene Dam is the main draw, especially for summer fishing, but a campsite booking is not a fishing licence and does not guarantee access to a preferred bank or boat-launch point. Check NSW fishing rules, lake conditions and any boating requirements separately.
The Snowy Mountains Highway also links the campground with northern Kosciuszko walking, cycling and heritage stops. Kiandra's gold-mining and early skiing history is a worthwhile addition to a fishing trip, subject to the open roads and tracks shown on current NPWS alerts.
What campers say#
The public evidence is small, so these are useful observations rather than a consensus. Two Anycamp reviews describe a quiet, spacious camp with lake views, easy dirt-road access in their conditions and very basic amenities. One winter visitor specifically reported strong cold and wind.
A recent Fishing Australia discussion also cautions that Denison should not be imagined as camping directly at every Eucumbene fishing spot. Treat current NPWS information as authoritative for access and facilities.

Book first, check alerts and weather, then confirm how far the campground is from the fishing access you intend to use. Bring water and a conservative cooking plan, leave your route with a trusted contact and avoid relying on mobile service.
