Halls Peak campground and picnic area

Halls Peak is for self-reliant tent campers who actively want a steep low-range 4WD descent to a remote Chandler River camp. It is the wrong choice for caravans, camper trailers, SUVs, low-clearance vehicles, wheelchair access or anyone uncomfortable reversing on a narrow road with limited passing places.

Decide before you book#

NPWS is unusually specific: the final 5km is narrow, very steep, unsealed, without barriers and vulnerable to slippery surfaces, washouts, rockfall and fallen trees.

Which site should you choose?#

The official layout shows 13 numbered tent sites around an internal loop beside the Chandler River, with the toilet, picnic shelter, picnic area and fireplaces marked. It does not publish pitch dimensions, shade or accessible grades.

• Ask NPWS which available pitch best suits your tent footprint before booking.
• For fewer trips to the toilet or shelter, use the layout to shortlist the nearer cluster, then confirm the allocation; do not infer an exact walking distance from the diagram.
• For more separation from the shared picnic area, ask which numbered sites are currently furthest from day-use activity.
• Do not select a riverside number expecting safe swimming, flat ground or privacy. Inspect the marked footprint, river level and overhead hazards on arrival before pitching.

Booking, permits and cost#

Book online for up to 12 people or two sites. The live booking flow controls price and availability. One vehicle is permitted per booking. Camping includes the Halls Peak vehicle permit; day visitors need a separate permit. Confirm the final party, vehicle, site and cancellation total before payment.

Your confirmation email should contain the locked-gate code. If it does not, call 1300 072 757 while you still have service.

What arrival is actually like#

From Grafton Road, take Kempsey Road (about 40km east of Armidale or 40km west of Ebor), turn onto Raspberry Road after 20km, follow it for 25km, then turn right onto Halls Peak Road for the final 5km.

At the park gate, use the booking code and re-lock the gate after passing. If the final descent is wet, blocked or beyond the vehicle/driver, do not continue: there is no trailer fallback and limited room to pass. Check-in is 2pm, so plan a daylight arrival with time to turn back. Once at camp, park within the one-vehicle allowance, identify the exit and toilet, inspect the pitch and river condition, then set up.

Self-sufficiency, rules and safety#

• Bring all drinking/cooking water, food, rubbish bags, lighting, first aid and emergency communications appropriate to limited reception.
• River water must be treated before drinking. There are non-flush toilets, picnic tables and wood barbecues, but no shower or bins.
• Chemical toilets, generators, trailers, motorbikes, amplified music, pets and smoking are prohibited.
• A fishing licence is required. The river can change quickly; swimming and paddling are not supervised.
• NPWS rates the campground as having no wheelchair access.

A worthwhile day at the river#

Base the day on conditions rather than a promised trail: fish with a current licence, paddle only if the river and your skills allow, or birdwatch from camp. Keep enough daylight and energy for camp tasks because the exit itself is the same steep 4WD road. If rain is forecast upstream or the river rises, abandon water plans and be ready to leave while the road is still passable.

What campers say#

Tripadvisor and Anycamp each expose only one public review, while a 2026 4x4 trip report describes the steep access and riverside setting. Reddit and forum searches did not produce a second independent, current campground account. That is too sparse for a recurring claim about quiet, road difficulty beyond the official warning, shade or site quality; rely on NPWS and your own vehicle assessment.

Alternatives#

• Riverside campground: another remote river camp with low-range 4WD access. Choose it for the Apsley River setting, not as an easy-road fallback.
• Wollomombi campground: choose it for a more conventional campground near the falls precinct. It gives up Halls Peak's Chandler River isolation but is the better comparison for campers who should not attempt the descent.

Current alert and final recheck#

As checked 1 October 2026, an aerial 1080 baiting program applies in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park until 5 October; pets are prohibited regardless. Alerts can change faster than this guide. On the day before travel, check the Halls Peak local alerts, weather and fire information, then call the Armidale NPWS office on 02 6738 9100 after rain or if the road status is unclear.
