Is Smiths Mill the trip you want?#

Smiths Mill is for campers who want a practical Grampians walking base close to Mackenzie Falls, with woodland atmosphere and more choice than the park's tiny campgrounds. It has 28 tent sites beside vehicle parking plus five drive-in sites for camper trailers, campervans and small caravans.

It is not a powered holiday park. Toilets are non-flush, the “shower” is a bush shower rather than a plumbed hot private cubicle, and supplied water is seasonal and non-potable. Large rigs, travellers needing reliable drinking water, and anyone expecting hotel-style washing facilities should choose differently.

Access and arrival#

Use C228 Wartook Road for the main approach; Parks Victoria identifies it as the best access. Old Mill Road is unsealed and should not be treated as the default shortcut. Recheck Grampians alerts, fire conditions and road closures before leaving Halls Gap or Wartook.

Check-in is after 2pm and checkout by 11am. Follow the campground signs to the booked area before unloading. The publicly accessible detailed plan could not be reliably inspected during this review, so confirm the live booking diagram and stated dimensions for the selected number—especially for any towable setup.

Which site should you choose?#

• Tent and simple vehicle camp: choose among the 28 tent sites where the vehicle parks adjacent, then compare slope, branches and distance from shared facilities on arrival.
• Camper trailer, campervan or small caravan: book one of only five drive-in sites; a tent-site booking is not evidence that a trailer fits.
• Amenity priority: request or select a position nearer the non-flush toilets and bush shower, accepting more pedestrian traffic.
• Quiet priority: favour separation from amenities and communal fire areas, accepting a longer night walk.

There is no verified evidence for a universally best numbered pitch, guaranteed shade or a level pad. Use current dimensions and inspect the actual ground.

Water, shower and setup reality#

Bring all drinking and cooking water. Parks Victoria describes tank and river-fed taps as seasonal and not suitable for drinking. The bush shower is useful for a rinse but should not be presented as a private hot shower; bring a wash plan and footwear suited to shared facilities.

Facilities include non-flush toilets, picnic tables and shared firepits. Bring firewood—collection is prohibited—and carry a stove for days when fires are restricted. Pack out rubbish. Dogs and other pets are prohibited.

A worthwhile day#

Mackenzie Falls is about 1km from the campground precinct, making the falls area the obvious first outing. Use only signed routes, check whether the base track or lookouts are open, and leave enough time and energy for the climb back from the base. For a lower-effort day, drive to Boroka or Reeds lookout after verifying road and weather conditions rather than adding an unplanned long walk.

What campers say#

Targeted searches across Tripadvisor-style pages, Reddit and camping forums did not yield enough clearly attributable, recent first-hand Smiths Mill campground reports to claim recurring site-level themes. Do not translate generic Grampians praise into promises about shade, shower condition, reception or quiet. The equipment split and water status from Parks Victoria are the reliable planning facts.

Alternatives#

Choose Borough Huts when a Halls Gap-side base and different walking access matter more than immediate Mackenzie Falls proximity. Choose Plantation campground for a less structured forest-camp experience, accepting different booking and facility conditions. Recheck both independently; neither is an identical overflow pitch.
