Cooks Mill Camping Area

Cooks Mill Camping Area occupies an old sawmill site beside Little River in Cathedral Range State Park. Tall peppermint, blackwood and red stringybark trees give much of the area useful shade, and several walks begin close to camp. The trade-off is a first-arrival choice among unmarked sites and only limited space for caravans and other larger vehicles.

Unmarked sites and limited large-rig space#

The official Cooks Mill page says individual sites cannot be reserved. You book and pay in advance, then select an available pitch when you arrive. Sites are unmarked and large enough for tents, while only a limited area suits camper trailers, campervans and caravans.

That distinction matters. A booking confirms campground capacity, not a level or secluded pitch matched to your exact dimensions. Larger setups benefit from arriving in daylight and carrying levelling options, while tent campers have more flexibility among the trees. Keep access tracks and vegetation clear when positioning vehicles and awnings.

Facilities include non-flush toilets, picnic tables, a shelter and communal fireplaces. There are no showers or powered sites. Parks Victoria's visitor guidance tells campers to bring drinking water and their own firewood. Never drink directly from Little River; natural water can be contaminated even when it looks clear.

Use the provided fireplaces only when restrictions permit. Firewood collection from the park and surrounding bush is prohibited, and the fireplaces do not include cooking plates. Bring a grill or self-contained cooking equipment and a fuel-stove backup. Check the Central fire district rating and Total Fire Ban status before lighting anything.

Year-round core area and seasonal Tweed Spur section#

The main Cooks Mill area is open year-round. The section along Tweed Spur Road closes in wetter months because sites become waterlogged. Parks Victoria normally aligns this with seasonal road closures after the King's Birthday long weekend in June and aims to reopen before Melbourne Cup weekend in November, but conditions can extend the closure.

Do not assume the seasonal wing is available because the booking product is visible. Check current conditions and the site map immediately before travel. Wet weather can also turn soft, shaded ground into a poor match for heavy vehicles even when the main campground remains open.

From Melbourne, follow the Maroondah Highway through Buxton, continue about 9.5km, then turn into Cathedral Lane. The park entrance is about 2.5km farther on. Continue beyond Neds Gully; Cooks Mill is at Lowerson Track off Little River Road, just before the river crossing. The booking page lists check-in at 2pm and check-out at 11am.

Walks from camp#

The gentle Friends Nature Trail is a 2km, roughly one-hour circuit through Manna Gum forest and past the old sawmill heritage area. Little River Walk is another accessible-feeling choice compared with the steep range routes, though natural surfaces and weather still matter.

Fitter hikers can climb toward North or South Jawbone and the Cathedral Range ridgeline. The Canyon and Wells Cave tracks involve exposure and are not recommended for children or people uncomfortable with heights. Rock climbing areas near the Jawbones and Sugarloaf Peak require appropriate skills and current access checks. Download a map and turn back early when heat, wet rock or visibility undermines the plan.
