Allenvale is for tent campers seeking forest quiet, birds and a simple base just outside Lorne—and who are willing to carry the entire camp about 230m. The river setting and wildlife supply the sense of escape; the fixed small footprint, no vehicle access, no water and no fires enforce a genuinely light setup.

It is the wrong choice for caravans, camper trailers, rooftop tents, car-dependent awnings or anyone unable to move gear over the carpark-to-camp route. It is also a weak choice if a shower, power or guaranteed open waterfall walk is essential. Lorne Foreshore is the practical comparison for vehicle access and serviced facilities; Big Hill offers another Otway camping context but still needs its own current road and site checks.

Choose for carry and fit—not an invented “best number”#

There are 20 numbered, unpowered tent sites. Every current booking entry is 7m x 4m, for up to six guests. The official material does not provide enough pitch-level detail to rank shade, privacy, slope or toilet distance.

Use these decision rules:

• measure the tent plus every guyline against 7m x 4m before booking;
• choose gear one person or a trolley can move over the 230m route;
• ask the land manager which available sites minimise toilet walking or passing foot traffic;
• ask whether the route and chosen pitch suit the trolley, pram or mobility aid you actually use;
• keep an ultralight first-night kit accessible in case rain makes repeated carries unpleasant.

Do not infer accessibility from a seemingly flat satellite image. The operator explicitly warns that facilities and terrain may challenge some visitors.

Arrival: park once, inspect, then carry#

Allenvale is just beyond Lorne off Allenvale Road, about two hours from Melbourne in normal trip planning. Follow current road signs to the designated carpark; vehicles do not continue to sites.

Save the booking and campground information before arrival. Leave valuables secured, walk the 230m route once with a light load, locate your numbered site and non-flush toilet, then decide how to stage the carry. In wet conditions, protect bedding and put tent, pegs and rain layer in the first load so shelter can go up before the rest.

There is no basis for expecting a staffed reception. Your booking secures a numbered 7m x 4m site, not porter service or vehicle unloading at the tent. If the route is unsafe for a group member, stop and contact the authority rather than driving beyond the carpark.

Pack for a dry camp and a fuel-stove meal#

Bring all drinking, cooking and washing water, plus a reserve. The campground has non-flush toilets, low picnic tables/seating and shelters, but no showers, power or fireplaces. Pack out all rubbish.

Fires are prohibited. Use a fuel stove or gas barbecue only when current fire settings permit. A no-fire camp also means packing warm layers and lighting rather than relying on a fire for comfort. The compact site and carry make freestanding, low-bulk shelter and disciplined food storage more useful than heavy campsite furniture.

The St George River is habitat, not a guaranteed safe swimming facility. Platypus may be seen around dawn or dusk; watch quietly from a distance and do not enter or disturb the bank to chase a sighting.

Plan around current closures#

Older campground reports often recommend the surrounding waterfall walks. As checked 29 September 2026, both the Phantom Falls Walk and St George River Loop were temporarily closed after flood damage.

Do not cross a closure because an old map shows a trail. For a worthwhile day, check the authority’s current walks list and choose an open signed route from Sheoak Picnic Area suited to the group’s time and ability, with a turn-around time. If closures remove the planned walk, use Lorne’s town and beach facilities as the fallback rather than improvising through damaged track.

CamperMate and 17 visible Anycamp reports repeatedly describe a quiet forest setting, bird and animal noise, and the carry from the carpark as the defining practical surprise. Multiple campers suggest a trolley; that advice follows directly from the official 230m walk-in rule.

Reports disagree on whether the carry feels easy, flat or rough, and describe seasonal insects and crowding. The authority’s accessibility warning controls: assess the route yourself. Old comments that mention rainwater should not be treated as drinking-water provision; the current official instruction is to bring your own.

Booking, alternatives and final checks#

Bookings and payment are required year-round. Confirm the live price, six-person limit, 7m x 4m fit and any cancellation terms in the booking flow. Recheck bushfire conditions, campground updates and trail closures immediately before travel.

If you cannot carry water and shelter 230m or the tent exceeds the pitch, Allenvale will not deliver the relaxed forest trip you want. Lorne Foreshore trades forest seclusion for vehicle access, town facilities and beach proximity. Big Hill remains a national-park alternative north of Lorne, but its current road, equipment and water rules require a separate Parks Victoria check. Choosing either is not giving up atmosphere—it is avoiding a setup that turns the first hour into preventable work.
