Coppermine Campground

Coppermine is a tiny four-site campground high in northern Gariwerd, built for campers who want views, remoteness and a real 4WD approach. It is not an overflow option for Halls Gap, a road-caravan stop or the right choice when the park road report is uncertain.

Who it suits — and who it does not#

Choose it for quiet, self-reliance and a northern Grampians day around Mount Zero, Hollow Mountain or Mount Stapylton. Skip it with a 2WD/AWD assumption, a caravan, a party larger than six per site, or anyone who needs a proven accessible surface, shower or potable water.

Site choice from a four-site map#

All four sites accept no more than six people, but a general map cannot guarantee shade, levelness or turning space. Filter by the setup category first: tent, camper trailer or campervan. Then use the official Coppermine map to compare the internal road, toilet carry and shared-fireplace position.

There is no defensible universally best number. Tent campers may accept a smaller vehicle footprint for separation; a camper trailer needs enough approach and departure space without encroaching on another site. If a site photo or dimension is absent, call Parks Victoria before booking rather than inferring it from the mountain setting.

Access and arrival#

Parks Victoria places the campground on Coppermine Track, about 1km from Pohlners Road or 4km from Mount Zero Road, and labels access 4WD only. Download the current Grampians road report and visitor guide before leaving coverage. A September 23, 2026 road update shows why: weather and bushfire impacts can close routes independently of a valid booking.

Arrive in daylight, confirm the correct track, inspect each changing surface and turn back at an official closure or condition beyond the driver and vehicle. At camp, match the booking to the site, check the whole trailer/campervan footprint before unhitching, locate the pit toilet and identify a clear exit. Do not expect a reception desk.

Facilities and comfort#

There are pit toilets, shared fireplaces and untreated tank water. Bring all drinking and cooking water, firewood, a fuel-stove backup, rubbish storage, lighting, first aid, warm bedding and vehicle recovery equipment. Pets are not permitted in the national park. The remote setting and four-site limit create privacy potential, not a promise of silence.

On Total Fire Ban days no fire may be lit. Parks Victoria says the park closes on a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating day; do not wait for an individual warning at camp.

A worthwhile northern Gariwerd day#

Use Coppermine as a base for Hollow Mountain or Mount Stapylton Loop only after checking current track status. Hollow Mountain is short but steep and reaches the Gulgurn Manja cultural shelter; Mount Stapylton is more strenuous, with rocky scrambling and steep slopes. Pick one route that matches the group, start in the cool part of the day, carry water and turn around before heat or weather erodes the return margin.

What campers say#

Targeted Google, Facebook and YouTube searches produced individual access questions and trip videos, but not two independent recent reports supporting a stable pitch-level pattern. That is useful honesty: do not promise easy track conditions, guaranteed plains views from a particular site or crowd-free nights. The official 4WD rule and road report remain controlling.

Alternatives, booking and rechecks#
