Mueller Inlet Campground

Mueller Inlet Campground is a tiny waterside camp in Croajingolong National Park, about 39km from Cann River. Its eight unpowered sites sit among banksia woodland overlooking the Mueller River and inlet, sheltered from the ocean by extensive dunes. Three sites are walk-in only, making this a place to choose the exact site type rather than book on the campground name alone.

The reward is a remote base for paddling, fishing and birdlife. The cost is self-sufficiency: no drinking water, no fires, a weather-dependent unsealed approach and limited nearby services. Parks Victoria does not recommend the access road for caravans.

Eight sites and what to bring#

Parks Victoria's Mueller Inlet page lists eight unpowered sites, including three walk-in sites. Confirm whether the selected bay has vehicle-side access and keep gear compact enough to carry if it does not.

The campground has a non-flush toilet but no drinking water. Bring all water for drinking, cooking and washing, along with rubbish bags, lighting, first aid, insect protection and offline navigation. There are no campground barbecues. The official Croajingolong visitor guide says fires are not allowed at Mueller Inlet, so pack a gas barbecue or fuel stove and check fire restrictions.

Pets are not permitted in the national park. Protect food and gear from wildlife, and take all rubbish out.

Road access and remote planning#

From Cann River, follow Tamboon Road and Point Hicks Road, then turn onto Bald Hills Track. Roads into this part of Croajingolong are unsealed and access is weather-dependent. The visitor guide specifically says roads to Mueller Inlet are not recommended for caravans. A booking is not evidence that your vehicle or the road conditions are suitable.

Check live Parks Victoria conditions just before departure. Current park notices can affect tracks or nearby attractions without closing Mueller Inlet itself, so read the location attached to each alert. Download the map and route while you still have reliable reception.

Paddling, fishing and nearby walks#

Motorised vessels are prohibited on Mueller Inlet. Canoes and kayaks can launch into the sheltered estuary, but wind, water level and the river mouth can change conditions. Wear a lifejacket and match the outing to experience.

Anglers need a current Victorian recreational fishing licence and should confirm species and bag limits. Parks Victoria describes estuary perch as common in the river system, but a productive fishery is never guaranteed.

The broader park includes the Thurra River Dunes and Point Hicks area. Some Point Hicks and Croajingolong tracks remain affected by older fire, erosion or storm damage, so do not build a day plan around a track without checking its current notice.

What campers say#

Legitimately accessible traveller commentary is sparse. A public campground photo post and the public imagery linked from the official map location are useful for orientation, not a review consensus:

• The inlet, not campground infrastructure, is the visual centre of the stay.
• The small clearing and eight-site scale create an intimate camp with little spare capacity.
• Banksia vegetation provides a coastal-bush setting, while paddling gear and water supplies take up valuable space.
• A walk-in site changes the arrival experience materially, especially with water and boats to carry.

No reliable public pattern was found for mobile reception, toilet condition, insects or road condition. Those can vary, and they have not been presented as settled facts.

Advance-booking periods apply over summer and Easter. Parks Victoria says other availability is released in August and December, so a date appearing unavailable well ahead may not yet have been released.
