Stapylton Campground

Stapylton Campground sits in open woodland below Mount Stapylton and Mount Zero in the northern Grampians. It is quieter and more remote than the Halls Gap side of the park, with walks and Aboriginal cultural sites close by. Its facilities are useful but basic: think pit toilets, bush showers and untreated tank water, not a holiday-park amenities block.

Facilities, water and campsite reality#

The official Stapylton Campground page lists shared fireplaces, picnic tables, pit toilets, bush showers and untreated tank water. Bring all drinking and cooking water because Parks Victoria explicitly advises visitors not to rely on the tank as potable supply. Pack shower footwear and enough lighting to use simple facilities after dark.

Bring your own firewood; collecting timber in the national park is not permitted. Use the shared fireplaces only when local restrictions allow, and never light a fire on a Total Fire Ban day. On Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating days, the park closes for public safety. A fuel stove is a sensible backup, but it too is controlled by fire-ban rules.

Wildlife is part of the campground's appeal. Kangaroos graze through the open area and smaller animals may investigate unsecured food. Store food and rubbish inside a vehicle or secure container, do not feed animals, and leave room around shared fireplaces and access tracks.

Access and accessibility details#

From Melbourne, allow a little over three hours. Follow the Western Highway to Dadswell Bridge, turn toward Wonwondah-Dadswell Bridge Road, then use Olive Plantation Road to reach the campground. Download directions before leaving dependable reception and check the official page for current park notices.

Accessibility varies by site. Parks Victoria identifies sites 1 and 2 as vehicle-accessible, each with an accessible picnic table on compacted gravel. Site 7 also has an accessible table but is not accessible by vehicle. The toilet block contains an accessible cubicle; the bush showers are not accessible. This is more precise—and more limited—than a general “wheelchair access” icon suggests.

The Parks Victoria booking portal requires advance reservations and lists check-in at 2pm and check-out at 11am. Review the campground map before choosing if your group has mobility needs or a larger setup. The public pages do not promise every site will suit every caravan or motorhome.

Walks and northern Grampians highlights#

The Mount Stapylton Loop Walk begins from the campground and mixes forested gullies, sandstone steps and exposed viewpoints. It is an adventurous walk rather than a casual campground stroll, so carry water, wear suitable footwear and assess heat and fire conditions before setting out.

For a shorter cultural visit, Ngamadjidj Shelter is nearby. Treat rock art places with care: stay on formed tracks, do not touch surfaces and follow all signage. Mount Zero and Flat Rock offer other northern-range views, while Brambuk in Halls Gap provides broader context about the six seasons of Gariwerd and the park's Traditional Owners.

Current closures elsewhere in the Grampians can change route choices and visitor pressure. Check the change-of-conditions section on the campground page rather than assuming an attraction mentioned in an older guide remains accessible.

What campers say#

Campground-specific public feedback is limited but useful. Reports on Tripadvisor's Mount Stapylton page, CamperMate and an independent Grampians campground guide commonly describe:

• Spacious open pitches and mountain views are the main draw, especially outside busy holiday periods.
• Kangaroos, emus and other wildlife are frequently seen around camp; secure food and keep distance.
• The open setting can feel exposed in wind and heat despite nearby trees, so site orientation and weather matter.
• Toilet condition reports vary. Campers expecting a basic pit-toilet facility are generally better prepared than those expecting a serviced block.
• Proximity to northern Grampians walks and climbing areas reduces driving, but current access rules still need an official check.
