Jimmy Creek Campground

Jimmy Creek Campground is an unpowered 21-site campground beside the Wannon River, halfway between Halls Gap and Dunkeld in Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park. It is a useful southern-and-eastern Grampians base with 2WD access, basic amenities and a walking trail leaving near camp. The site inventory is divided by equipment, so caravans and camper trailers need the correct drive-in category.

Kangaroos, wallabies and birds are frequently seen around the native bushland. Keep food secure and give wildlife space rather than feeding it.

Site types and rig suitability#

Parks Victoria's Jimmy Creek page lists 13 tent-based campsites, four drive-in sites for caravans and campervans, and another four drive-in sites for camper trailers, caravans and campervans. All are unpowered and each accommodates no more than six people.

That distinction matters. Do not place a camper trailer on a category that omits it merely because a caravan appears to fit. Use the official campground map and the equipment label shown during booking. For a long rig, consider turning space as well as the nominal sleeping footprint.

The campground is accessible by 2WD from Grampians Road. Fire and weather impacts can still change park roads. On 11 September 2026 Parks Victoria published an updated Grampians road report, so check the newest attachment rather than relying on a saved copy.

Facilities, water and fires#

Amenities comprise shared pit toilets, a cold-water shower, communal picnic tables and shared fireplaces with barbecue hotplates. This is not a powered or serviced caravan park. Parks Victoria does not list potable water, so arrive with enough drinking and cooking water for every person.

Bring your own firewood; collection inside the national park is prohibited. Use only the provided fireplaces and never light a fire when restrictions or a Total Fire Ban prohibit it. A fuel stove is the practical backup.

Mobile coverage can be variable through the Grampians. Save the campsite map, road report and emergency information before arrival. Keep rubbish contained and remove it if bins are unavailable or full.

Walks and current park conditions#

The Teddy Bear Gap Loop starts near camp and passes through manna gum and black wattle forest towards a rocky viewpoint over the Serra Range. The campground is also near a Grampians Peaks Trail access point, making it useful for day walkers who want an early start.

Not every well-known Grampians attraction is currently accessible. Parks Victoria's live notice says the Mackenzie Falls precinct and its carpark are closed for major construction from 9 February through the end of 2026, while several fire-damaged walks remain closed. Read each alert carefully: those closures do not automatically mean Jimmy Creek is closed, but they may change a day-trip plan.

Getting there and booking#

Jimmy Creek sits on Grampians Road between Halls Gap and Dunkeld. From Melbourne, Parks Victoria directs visitors via the Western Freeway to Ararat, then the Pyrenees Highway towards the national park. Arrive with daylight if you need to identify a touring site and position a long vehicle.
