Johanna Beach Campground

Johanna Beach Campground gives you an exposed, ocean-first stay rather than a sheltered family swimming beach. Its 25 unpowered sites sit on open, undulating grass behind coastal dunes. Choose it for surf, surf fishing and direct beach access; choose elsewhere if you need drinking water, showers, power, campfires, a reliably level bay or a patrolled beach.

The three decisions that matter#

Choosing a numbered site#

The official map shows the gate, one internal road loop, toilets, non-potable water and beach access. The current operator page publishes dimensions for every bay.

• Large caravan or family footprint: start with site 2 (10m × 13m), then compare site 1 (11m × 8m), 3 (10m × 9m) and 9 (10m × 8m). These dimensions are boundaries, not a guarantee of usable level area.
• Beach and toilet convenience: the map groups sites 21–25 near the beach-access and toilet end. Sites 24 and 25 are both 9m × 9.5m; sites 21–23 are smaller. Expect more passing walkers and facility traffic.
• More separation from the entry facilities: sites 14–20 lie around the far side of the loop. Check whether the longer toilet route and natural ground suit the group.
• Avoid for a bulky setup: site 17 is 5m × 4m; sites 18 and 19 are 5m × 9m. Their six-person limit does not mean six people's equipment will fit comfortably.

The authority warns that the grass is undulating and some sites slope. Coastal vegetation gives some shelter, but the setting remains open and wind-exposed. Pack strong pegs, keep awning use conservative and inspect where runoff would travel before setup.

Booking, price and 2026–27 peak rules#

Book the specific bay through GORCAPA and use the live checkout for the current price. Each site is unpowered and limited to six people. For the published 2026–27 summer release, seven-night minimum blocks apply from 19 December 2026 through 23 January 2027, followed by a three-night minimum through 26 January; the maximum stay is 14 nights.

Those dates are not a permanent rule. Recheck later seasons, the selected bay's size and the complete checkout total before paying.

Arrival and the first hour#

GORCAPA estimates about three hours from Melbourne via the inland Colac route and about four hours by the Great Ocean Road. Access is near Glenaire. Save the booking, site map and alerts before the last leg; the page does not promise reception or a staffed check-in desk.

At the gate, follow the internal road to the booked number without cutting across grass. Park adjacent to the bay as directed, then walk the full rectangle and check slope, soft ground and the safest vehicle orientation before unhitching. Locate the toilet, non-potable tap and beach route before dark. If the ground is unsafe for the booked rig, keep the setup hitched and call GORCAPA rather than occupying another site.

On 1 October 2026 the official page displayed the statewide H5 bird-flu notice, with no separate campground closure shown. The campground is bushfire-prone, so check alerts, weather and fire ratings again on departure day.

Self-sufficiency, rules and accessibility#

Facilities are two standard non-flush toilet cubicles, one unisex accessible toilet and an outside basin. The mapped water is non-potable and the operator directs campers to bring drinking water. There is no power, shower or rubbish collection.

Solid-fuel fires and generators are prohibited. Bring a fuel stove or gas barbecue and use it only when current restrictions allow. Take all rubbish out. Johanna Beach is exposed and unpatrolled; surf experience, supervision and a shore-based fallback matter more than proximity to the sand.

Accessibility is limited by natural terrain. Parking is generally on grass beside each site, with no designated site-to-toilet paths. A short compacted-gravel route reaches the toilet area, including the accessible cubicle, but the beach is not wheelchair-accessible from camp. A worthwhile day that needs transport planning#

The official Great Ocean Walk day section from Aire River to Johanna Beach is 12.5km one way, graded medium/hard. It crosses varied coastal terrain and includes an unbridged Johanna River beach crossing that may be unsafe after rain or with high water. Arrange a vehicle shuttle or commercial transfer before starting; do not assume a 25km return is a casual day. If the crossing is unsafe, turn back rather than wade.

For a low-commitment day, use the campground's signed beach route, watch conditions from shore and return the same way. The beach is not a substitute for a patrolled swimming venue.

• Short beach access and the sound of surf are recurring positives across independent channels.
• Several campers report small or sloping bays, consistent with the official dimensions and terrain warning.
• Wind evidence is mixed: some visitors describe shelter within the vegetation while others report strong exposure. Book for bay size, but pack for an open coast.
• Surface reports range from grassy to dusty, reflecting weather and season rather than a fixed condition.
• One Anycamp camper liked site 7 for its balance between beach and toilets; that is a single preference, not a guaranteed best bay.

Alternatives: when another campground is a better fit#

• Choose Blanket Bay for a smaller campground behind a more sheltered cove, rockpools and shared fireplaces. It does not accept caravans and its final approach is also unsealed.
• Choose Aire River West for estuary paddling, 40 sites and more large-rig categories. The trade-offs are narrow unsealed access, a 5-tonne bridge limit, flooding exposure and seasonal closures for some sites.

Recheck before leaving home#

Confirm the selected bay, live price, peak minimum stay, weather, fire rating and park alerts. Ask GORCAPA about surface, accessibility or a marginal rig fit. The operator publishes dimensions but not pitch gradient, current grass firmness or guaranteed wind shelter.
