Chalk's Campground is a bookable bush campground among mature red gums in Mount Crawford Forest, about an hour from Adelaide. ForestrySA describes it as one of three designated campgrounds it manages in the Mount Lofty Ranges and runs it on a defined annual season rather than year-round. That makes dates, fire rules and the correct site category the important details to settle before loading the car.

This is forest camping, not a conventional holiday park. Come for the red-gum setting, walking and riding country and a quiet evening outdoors. Treat the booking confirmation as the source for the facilities attached to your chosen site, and bring enough drinking water, lighting and cooking equipment to be self-sufficient.

Sites and choosing the right fit#

The official Chalk's booking portal separates inventory into tent-only sites, sites suitable for a tent or camper trailer, and sites that can also accommodate a caravan. Do not assume that an empty patch on the map will fit a towed setup. Enter your equipment accurately and compare the individual site description before checkout.

Numbered sites sit among established trees, so usable shape, shade and manoeuvring room vary. A compact tent has more flexibility than a long caravan and tow vehicle. Arriving in daylight gives you time to identify the numbered bay and position without damaging vegetation or crowding the access track.

ForestrySA requires day visitors using a campsite to book and pay as well. A campsite is therefore not a free picnic reservation for extra vehicles or a large gathering. Organised group activities, including school, Scout, walking or cycling events, require an application at least four weeks ahead.

Season, fires and forest rules#

Camping is permitted from 1 April to 30 November. ForestrySA accepts bookings up to 365 days ahead, with new dates released incrementally. The forest can still close for safety or operations, so review the current ForestrySA camping information shortly before departure.

Wood fires are normally permitted only from 1 May to 31 October, in the designated fire pit, and those dates can be shortened when high fire danger persists. Gas cooking is permitted during the camping season subject to restrictions. ForestrySA closes the forest on declared Total Fire Ban days; never rely on the presence of a fire pit as permission to light one.

Bring your own firewood where possible. ForestrySA allows limited collection from the plantation forest floor near campsites, but standing timber must not be cut. Keep the fire attended and extinguish it completely before leaving.

Dogs are welcome but must remain on lead in the campground, picnic areas and busy trails. Quiet hours are 10pm to 7am, and ForestrySA applies a zero-tolerance party policy.

What campers say#
