Palm Valley (Overflow) Campground

Finke Gorge National Park

Plan Palm Valley overflow camping with high-clearance 4WD access, water and fire rules, remote preparation, walking options and traveller observations.

Palm Valley (Overflow) Campground is the additional bookable area attached to the Palm Valley camping precinct in Finke Gorge National Park. It offers access to the same remarkable sandstone and palm country when the main allocation is busy, but it remains a remote 4WD camp—not an easier-access substitute or an informal arrival area.

High-clearance 4WD access#

Finke Gorge is 138km west of Alice Springs, with the park turn-off just west of Hermannsburg. The final 16km follows the sandy bed of the Finke River, and the official park page restricts access to high-clearance 4WD vehicles.

Heavy rain can make the river route impassable. Check road and park conditions before leaving, travel in daylight and carry recovery boards, a compressor, tyre-repair equipment, extra fuel and water. Experience on sand matters more than the distance. NT Parks does not recommend towing trailers on the much more remote Finke River 4WD route beyond the Palm Valley area.

Overflow-specific limits#

The public Finke Gorge page confirms a Palm Valley campground but does not publish a separate overflow site count, pad-size table or facility-by-facility inventory. Use the allocation and vehicle limits in your live booking confirmation, and do not infer that every overflow space matches a photographed main-campground site.

All camping must remain in designated areas. The overflow name does not authorise roadside or riverbed camping outside the booked footprint.

Facilities and camp rules#

Park-wide Palm Valley facilities include drinking water, public toilets, showers, gas barbecues, picnic tables and communal firepits. Confirm the walking distance and exact facilities serving overflow with NT Parks before relying on them, and still carry a treated-water reserve.

Collect firewood before entering the park. At Palm Valley, fires are permitted only in designated firepits and remain subject to restrictions. Bring a fuel stove. Pets are prohibited and there are no rubbish bins, so every item must leave with you.

Walks and protecting the palms#

The Arankaia and Mparra walks explore Palm Valley and the surrounding plateau. Start early, carry plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity in the heat of the day. Young palms can be damaged by trampling, so remain on marked tracks even when a shortcut looks harmless.

The more remote Finke River route to Boggy Hole and beyond requires a separate level of vehicle and communications planning; do not treat a campground stay as proof that your crew is equipped for it.

What campers say#

Standalone overflow reviews are sparse. Broader public reports from Tripadvisor's Palm Valley page, Tripadvisor's Finke Gorge page and the Anycamp listing suggest qualified patterns:

  • Campers repeatedly describe the riverbed drive as slow, sandy and enjoyable for capable drivers, not a section to rush.
  • The track beyond the campground toward the palms is commonly reported as rougher than the approach to camp.
  • Visitors often recommend two nights so the walks can be done in cooler hours without compressing the 4WD drive.
  • Shade and site character vary, and an overflow booking should not be assumed to have the main area's best-positioned pad.

These observations do not establish overflow facilities or current track safety.

Booking and alternatives#

Book and pay through the NT Parks booking system before travel; on-site payment is unavailable. Applicable visitors also need an NT Parks Visitor Pass. Save the booking, park map and emergency contacts offline.

If overflow dates are unavailable, compare the main Palm Valley allocation first. Boggy Hole is not a simple equivalent: it sits on a much more remote high-clearance 4WD route. CampWatch can monitor supported dates, but a cancellation should never replace the required vehicle, recovery gear or weather check.
