Ormiston Gorge Campground

Ormiston Gorge Campground is a small, drive-in base in Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park, close to one of the West Macs' best-known waterholes and walking areas. It is more developed than many park camps in the Red Centre: tents, camper trailers, caravans and motorhomes can use it, and shared toilets, showers and gas barbecues are provided.

Why stay here#

Staying inside the Ormiston precinct puts campers close to the gorge at the quieter ends of the day and gives walkers an early start. The official Ormiston Gorge page describes a category B campground accessible to all vehicle types, including caravans.

The campground is reached via sealed Larapinta and Namatjira drives, roughly 135 kilometres west of Alice Springs. Check current road and park notices before departure, particularly after rain, and arrive with fuel and essential supplies rather than assuming every visitor service will be open.

Facilities and site expectations#

NT Parks lists gas barbecues, toilets and showers. Sites are unpowered and generators are not permitted. Bring drinking water, food, warm bedding, sun protection and a backup fuel stove; shared facilities can be busy or temporarily unavailable.

Exact site size, slope and shade vary. Compare the live booking map with the full length of a caravan, tow vehicle, awning or tent before paying. A listing that says caravans are accepted does not mean every individual pitch fits every rig.

Red Centre temperatures swing sharply. Winter nights can fall close to or below freezing while exposed daytime walks are hot in the sun. Layer clothing, carry more water than a coastal trip and secure food and rubbish.

Walks, waterhole and safety#

Ormiston Gorge supports short and overnight walks. Use the current park map, choose a route for the weather and ability of the whole group, and start longer walks early. Do not enter a closed trail or gorge section.

The waterhole can be very cold, even when the air is warm. Check whether swimming is open, enter gradually, supervise children and never dive into unknown water. Water levels and access change after rain. Natural water is not a substitute for the drinking water carried for camp.

Booking and visitor pass#

Book the campsite through the NT Parks online system before arrival. Visitors to the Northern Territory need a separate NT Parks Visitor Pass; keep both confirmations available offline.

Popular travel periods can fill the compact campground. Confirm cancellation terms, site dimensions and current alerts before committing to the drive from Alice Springs.

• Campers value being a short walk from the gorge and having hot showers after dusty travel.
• The campground is compact; sites can feel close together and some pitches are less level than others.
• Shade is useful but uneven, so site choice and an independent shelter matter.
• Reviews of amenity cleanliness are mixed, which is plausible for heavily used shared facilities.
• Visitors repeatedly recommend booking ahead rather than expecting a late walk-up place.

Plan for the campground's shared character: keep awnings, guy lines and vehicles within the booked footprint, minimise light after dark and do not occupy picnic or barbecue space with private equipment.
