Is Bongaree the trip you want?#

Bongaree is strongest for campers who want an easy, social Bribie Island base: Pumicestone Passage is across Welsby Parade, food and clubs are walkable, and the park has hot showers, a camp kitchen and powered sites. Choose it for family time, boating access and convenience rather than a secluded bush escape.

It is a poor fit if you need a pet-friendly stay, generator power, a campfire or guaranteed quiet away from a public road. The park is municipal and compact, not a private waterfront retreat—the foreshore is across the road.

The park is run by the City of Moreton Bay. It offers powered sites, cabins and cottages rather than a resort-style list of attractions, so it suits travellers who value waterfront access and being able to walk into Bongaree.

Which site should you choose?#

Council separates the powered sites into waterview, standard and drive-through options. If the view matters most, start with the waterview powered sites. If manoeuvring a longer setup is the bigger concern, check whether the drive-through category is available for your dates.

The booking system can also apply restrictions to individual categories. For example, some waterview inventory has been listed as unsuitable for tents, so do not assume every powered site fits every setup. Match the booking category to your caravan, campervan or tent before paying.

There is no public pitch map that proves which numbered site is quietest or shadiest. Ask reception to match the need instead of requesting an invented favourite:

• Passage outlook: request a waterview category and confirm what sits between the pitch and Welsby Parade.
• Long or awkward rig: ask for the drive-through category and give the total towing length, not just caravan length.
• Light sleeper: request the greatest available setback from Welsby Parade, accepting that it may give up the view.
• Tent: confirm the exact category accepts tents; some waterview inventory has excluded them.

The trade-off is unusually clear: the frontage delivers the view and quickest foreshore access, while a more internal position may reduce road exposure. Reception can confirm allocation; the booking category alone cannot.

Facilities and amenities#

The current City of Moreton Bay listing includes an amenities block with hot showers and toilets, a camp kitchen, barbecue area, coin-operated laundry, playground and Wi-Fi. General waste and recycling bins are also provided.

Independent guest reviews repeatedly praise the cleanliness of the amenities and camp kitchen. Those reports do not guarantee what you will find on a particular day, but cleanliness is one of the more consistent themes in the park's traveller feedback.

Open fires and generators are not allowed, so plan to cook with the provided facilities or your own permitted gas or electric setup.

Location: the main reason to stay here#

Bongaree Caravan Park is at 25-47 Welsby Parade, Bongaree, across the road from the Pumicestone Passage foreshore. Council lists shops, cafés and restaurants within walking distance, with the bowls club next door.

That walkability is also the clearest recurring theme in traveller reviews. Guests mention being able to walk to the beach, takeaway food, cafés, restaurants and local clubs rather than driving for every meal or outing.

Powered sites allow a maximum of 6 people including children and infants, according to the current council page. Extra-person rates apply for bookings of 3 or more people.

What arrival is actually like#

Approach on Welsby Parade and look for the park entrance rather than turning toward the public foreshore. Powered sites check in from 1pm; cabins and cottages from 2pm; all accommodation checks out by 10am. Before unhitching, confirm the assigned site, the direction of entry and whether your drawbar or rear overhang remains inside the boundary.

Council says early check-in is limited to up to 30 minutes before the normal time. Arrival after 5pm needs to be arranged with the park. Late check-out is not offered.

Once parked, identify the nearest amenities and pedestrian exit before dark. The foreshore, jetty and food are walkable, so a correctly positioned rig can stay put for much of the visit.

Pets, fires and generators#

Animals are not permitted, apart from registered guide, hearing or assistance dogs with identification. Open fires and generators are also prohibited. These are current park rules, not traveller-review opinions.

Across independent reviews, three themes recur often enough to be useful when planning a stay:

1. The location is the standout. The passage, foreshore paths, food and clubs are all close enough to reach on foot.
2. Amenities are commonly described as clean and well kept. Multiple reviews call out the bathrooms and camp kitchen specifically.
3. Road exposure varies by position and by reviewer. Several travellers say evenings settle down, while others notice Welsby Parade. Noise-sensitive campers should ask for setback, not assume a waterview pitch is also the quietest.
4. Peak weekends feel busier. That makes an internal position and an arrival before the late-afternoon rush more useful than they are midweek.

A worthwhile day without moving the car#

Walk the Bongaree foreshore path to the jetty and Seaside Museum, then return via cafés or the bowls club. This plan plays to Bongaree's real advantage—connection and convenience—without promising a remote nature experience. Boaters should verify ramp conditions and parking separately before towing away from camp.
