Beach camping zone 3 - Poyungan and Winnam

Zone 3 is for campers chasing an unfenced eastern-beach base, fishing, inland lake access and the freedom to choose an open sandy camp. It is a poor fit for inexperienced sand drivers, short one-night itineraries, families depending on a fence, or anyone needing toilets, water, showers, power, bins or reliable reception.

Best site means the safest legal opening today#

The official visitor page places the zone between Poyungan Rocks and Happy Valley and offers two named areas: Poyungan and Winnam. The booking is open camping, not a numbered pitch. There is no public plan establishing dimensions, reliable shade, privacy or amenity distance.

Stay within signs and behind the foredune without damaging vegetation. Reject a patch in a vehicle line, drainage hollow, recent tide/debris reach, very soft entry or blind exit. Parties with children should favour uninterrupted sightlines and enough setback from moving vehicles, while recognising that the zone remains unfenced. Wind, shade and neighbours are real trade-offs but can only be assessed at the actual opening.

The 47km arrival is part of the stay#

QPWS places Poyungan Rock 47km north of Hook Point. A high-clearance 4WD with low range is required; off-road camper trailers are accepted. The Eastern Beach scenic drive is available only two hours either side of low tide.

From Inskip Point, reduce tyre pressure, take the 10–15 minute barge and leave Hook Point with enough tide, fuel and daylight for slow sections and a rejected campsite. From River Heads, verify the western barge time and current inland route. Do not assume a 47km beach run behaves like a sealed road: aircraft, pedestrians, washouts, creek mouths and soft exits share the route. Carry the camping permit, separate vehicle permit and barge booking offline. If conditions would force travel beyond the safe beach window, turn back or use a legal fallback.

Arrival and first hour#

1. Enter after 2pm and confirm the booking names zone 3, Poyungan and Winnam.
2. Follow legal signs; do not camp on a convenient unmarked foredune or track gap.
3. Walk the intended vehicle and trailer line before leaving the traffic corridor.
4. Check firm sand, recent water/debris, drainage, branches, wind and an unobstructed exit.
5. Establish the portable toilet, water, rubbish and hand-washing system immediately.
6. Lock food, bait, fish, rubbish and scented equipment; never store them in a tent.
7. Display the tag and download the next tide, weather, alerts and emergency details.

There is no staffed reception. Checkout is before 11am, but a safe tide window controls when the vehicle can actually leave.

Cost, zero facilities and wongari reality#

The booking surface allows tents, walk-ins and off-road camper trailers in open camping, with up to five vehicles per permit subject to the party booked. State fees checked on 1 October 2026 are $7.75 per person per night or $31 per family per night. Add the K'gari vehicle permit—currently $61.80 for one month or less—and commercial barge cost.

There are no toilets or other facilities. Bring a portable toilet, all water, stove, rubbish storage, recovery gear, insect protection, first aid and offline navigation. Open fires are prohibited. Generators under 65dB(A)/2.0kVA may run 9am–9pm. Reception is intermittent.

Zone 3 is unfenced. A reported April 2025 wongari attack at Winnam followed food being accessed at another camp, reinforcing the official rule rather than creating a site ranking: secure every food, bait, fish and rubbish item; stay in groups; carry a long safety stick; keep children within arm's reach; never run. Report encounters to QPWS on 07 4127 9150 and call 000 for emergencies.

A worthwhile day beyond the beach#

The Lake Garawongera scenic drive leads to the perched lake and day-use area; Rainbow Gorge and Kirrar Sandblow are the other named zone attractions. Choose one inland objective, check its current route and closure status, carry water away from the vehicle and set a turnaround that preserves the return beach window. A lake or calm-looking beach still needs official safety assessment; ocean swimming is not recommended by default on K'gari's eastern shore.

What campers say#

Traveller material specific to Poyungan or Winnam is sparse and uneven. Searches on 1 October 2026 covered Reddit, public Facebook results, Tripadvisor, video trip records and camping forums.

• A public 360-degree Winnam recording provides a dated visual snapshot, not a current judgement about sand, shade or available space.
• A 2026 beach-cleanup report described volunteers becoming stuck between Poyungan and Yidney Rocks; that isolated event reinforces tide and recovery margins but does not establish routine access difficulty.
• No two independent recent campers support a quieter-area, reception or cleanliness consensus. Choose from official boundaries and today's inspection.

Alternatives#

• Beach camping zone 2 keeps open eastern-beach camping but sits farther south near Lake Wabby; it retains tide, toilet and wongari demands.
• Beach camping zone 4 lies north toward Eli Creek and Happy Valley; choose it for that touring plan, not as a safety upgrade because it is also unfenced.
• Dundubara camping area is the stronger choice for a fence, toilets, showers and treated water, accepting a different location and formal layout.

Recheck tide, barge, permits, conditions report, fires and alerts just before travel. The legal openings, sand firmness, exposure, neighbours and wongari activity remain volatile arrival-day unknowns.
