Beach camping zone 2 combines the One Tree, Cornwells and Gabala areas on K’gari's eastern beach between Eurong and Poyungan Rocks. It is an open, undeveloped beach zone rather than a numbered campground: choose an established site behind the foredunes, keep off vegetation and expect no facilities.

The location works well for self-sufficient 4WD travellers who want a beach base within reach of Eurong and central-island day trips. It is not a substitute for a fenced family campground or a serviced caravan park.

Choosing between One Tree, Cornwells and Gabala#

Your permit covers the zone, not a reserved patch of sand. Conditions, occupancy and wind exposure decide which established clearing works best when you arrive. Camp only in the designated area behind the dunes; the beach is a traffic corridor and the foredunes are both fragile and unsafe for camping.

The official zone 2 page should be checked for maps and current instructions. Do not assume an empty-looking area is available if it is outside the mapped camping zone.

4WD, tides and permits#

Access is for high-clearance 4WD vehicles, and the eastern beach must be treated as a road. Plan movements around safe tide windows, drive to conditions and watch for washouts, creek crossings, pedestrians and aircraft. Off-road camper trailers are permitted, but conventional on-road trailers are a poor match for beach access.

Both a camping permit and a K’gari vehicle access permit are required. Save permits offline and check park alerts just before travel. Mobile reception is intermittent, so last-minute online planning may not be possible once on the island.

No facilities, no fires#

There are no toilets, showers, taps, bins or picnic tables in zone 2. Bring a portable toilet, all drinking water, rubbish storage, shade, recovery equipment and enough supplies for delays. Secure food and rubbish and never feed wongari (dingoes).

Fires are prohibited in this zone. Queensland Parks permits generators up to 2kVA and below 65dB between 9am and 9pm, but quieter setups make a large difference in open beach camps. Recheck those conditions before arrival.

This is an unfenced camping zone. Queensland Parks recommends fenced campgrounds for families with young children. In any beach camp, keep children close, never leave food accessible, walk in groups and follow all wongari safety instructions.

Plan the arrival, not just the nights#

The booking check-in time does not override tides or daylight. Build the ferry or barge crossing, fuel stop and beach-running window into one plan, with enough margin to reach the zone without rushing. If the tide or track condition removes that margin, wait in a safe permitted place rather than attempting a marginal run.

Carry a tyre gauge, compressor, shovel and rated recovery equipment, and understand how to use them before the trip. Salt water and soft sand are hard on vehicles; avoid driving through seawater and rinse the vehicle after leaving the island. Take rubbish and toilet waste to an authorised disposal point rather than burying or burning it.

What campers say#

Campground-specific public reviews are sparse, and the three areas are often discussed collectively. A K’gari traveller review from campers using two off-road hybrid trailers reports finding a workable zone 2 setup and using it for day trips towards Eurong and Lake McKenzie. Treat that as one experience, not a guarantee of trailer access or site conditions.

Broader traveller discussion of K’gari beach zones repeatedly raises wind exposure as a site-selection concern. The practical response is to assess the actual clearing on arrival, stay behind the foredunes and carry robust shelter rather than relying on a named sub-area always being protected.

Booking zone 2#
