Beach camping zone 4 - Guluri and Eli

Zone 4 delivers the K’gari experience people picture: an unfenced camp behind the eastern foredunes, beach driving at the door and Eli Creek nearby. It also demands the most from the camper. Guluri and Eli have no facilities, the beach is both a road and aircraft landing zone, tides control movement, and wongari (dingoes) can enter camp.

Choose it for self-reliant adults or experienced families wanting beach freedom and a central eastern-coast base. Families with children up to 14 should follow QPWS advice and choose a fenced campground—most directly, the separately bookable Eli fenced camping area.

Choose a patch for safety, not a view#

The zone permit covers Guluri and Eli beach camping areas but does not assign a numbered pitch or publish a reliable “best” patch. Use formed access points only; driving on dunes is illegal. Keep the complete booking group in one compact location, with camping structures no more than 3m apart.

On arrival, inspect an existing legal patch for firm high sand, a clear 4WD exit, overhead and dune hazards, separation from the traffic line and enough space for an off-road trailer to articulate. Do not camp where the next tide can trap the vehicle or where other drivers must thread through the living area.

Eli is useful for proximity to Eli Creek; Guluri may better suit a route nearer Happy Valley. That is a location trade-off, not evidence that one area is always quieter, safer or firmer. Public sources do not support guaranteed shade or a favourite entrance.

Arrival: tide, daylight and permits are one plan#

The zone is between Happy Valley and Eli Creek. Happy Valley is 56.2km north of Hook Point. The Eastern Beach scenic drive is accessible only about two hours either side of low tide, and actual erosion, creek crossings and queues can make the trip much slower.

Use a registered high-clearance 4WD with low-range capacity. Buy the vehicle access permit and camping permit before the island, ensure the number plate is correct and save both offline. From Inskip, reduce tyre pressure before the sand, take the barge to Hook Point and retain enough tide and daylight margin to stop rather than race the water.

When you reach zone 4, identify a formed entrance, check the beach for vehicles and aircraft, then inspect the exit before unloading. Display the camping booking number, establish the portable toilet and wongari-safe storage first, and keep children beside an adult. Check-out is by 11am, but the next safe travel tide determines when packing must begin.

The conditions report was updated 22 September 2026 when researched. Active issues included severe erosion near the Inskip landing, Happy Valley ramp reconstruction and wongari rearing/emergence season. Read the current conditions and alerts immediately before travel.

Bring a toilet, water and a closed food system#

There are no toilets, showers, drinking taps, bins or fire rings. Bring all drinking and cooking water, a portable chemical toilet, rubbish capacity and a legal disposal plan. Open fires are prohibited. A gas or manufactured-fuel appliance must meet QPWS requirements, including being at least 20cm off the ground, more than 2m from flammable material and fully self-contained.

Generators are allowed only from 9am to 9pm, with sound under 65dB and output up to 2.0kVA. Mobile coverage is intermittent; do not make reception part of the safety plan.

Keep food, rubbish, fish and toiletries secured from wongari at all times. Never feed or attract them. The fence at Eli camping area is a deterrent, not part of zone 4. Adults must keep children close and know the current wongari guidance.

A worthwhile day without losing the travel window#

Eli Creek is the obvious low-driving day: arrive early enough to avoid peak traffic, assess depth and current, and supervise children in the cold flowing water. Keep footwear and the return walk in mind. Traveller reviews repeatedly describe the float as memorable and the water as cold.

Lake Garawongera is an alternative official walk-and-swim objective, but inland closures and the tide needed to return to camp can change the plan. Calculate the drive and turnaround from the current conditions report; never turn an inland visit into a high-tide beach dash.

What campers say#

Recent Reddit K’gari discussions repeatedly value the central eastern-coast position for Eli Creek, lakes and day trips, while warning that island travel is slow and each attraction can consume a day. Tripadvisor K’gari reports echo the need to plan around low tide and describe close wongari encounters.

These reports support choosing zone 4 for location and building larger time margins. They do not establish a particular Guluri/Eli patch, current traffic, safe water entry or sand firmness. Official conditions control those decisions.

Alternatives worth comparing#

• Eli fenced camping area is the closest family-focused alternative: a dingo-deterrent fence and separate booking, but still no facilities and the same need for a portable toilet and water.
• Central Station trades beach-at-the-door freedom for a fenced forest campground with toilets, coin-operated hot showers and no generators—often the better first K’gari camp.

Book zone 4 only after the vehicle, tide, toilet and wongari plan is complete. CampWatch can catch a cancellation, but an opening does not make an unsafe tide or unsuitable vehicle workable.
