Amamoor Creek camping area

Amamoor Creek camping area is a large, open grassy campground among ironbark and blue gum in Amamoor State Forest. Unlike many protected-area camps, it accommodates tents, caravans, camper trailers, campervans, motorhomes, buses and organised groups. Dogs are also permitted under the land manager's conditions, making this a practical forest base for travellers who cannot use dog-prohibited national-park sites.

There are no separately numbered sites. That flexibility suits groups and longer rigs, but it also means shade, neighbour spacing and ground condition are chosen on arrival rather than guaranteed by a site number.

Layout and choosing a position#

Keep the complete setup within an established grassy area and preserve vehicle lanes. Inspect the ground for softness, drainage and overhead branches before levelling a caravan or pitching a tent. Large open areas can feel spacious in quiet periods and much busier around events or holidays.

Access from Amamoor#

The campground is about 16km west of Amamoor township along Amamoor Creek Road and roughly 4km beyond Cedar Grove. The unsealed road is normally suitable for conventional vehicles, including tow vehicles, but heavy rain and creek crossings can alter access. Check park alerts and the forecast before bringing a low-clearance or heavy rig.

There is no numbered bay to guide arrival, so reach camp in daylight and avoid blocking established access. Fuel and stock-up options are outside the forest; carry enough supplies for the complete stay.

Facilities, water and quiet hours#

Facilities include toilets, cold showers, picnic tables, communal fire rings and water pumped from the creek. The water is not safe to drink without treatment and may contain harmful organisms. Bring potable water and use the campground supply only in accordance with current signs.

Open fires are allowed only in communal rings when no ban or prohibition applies. Bring clean, milled timber and never collect forest wood. Generators are not permitted, so plan battery or solar needs before arrival. Pack out rubbish unless current signage identifies an authorised disposal point.

The campground is the home of the annual Gympie Music Muster. Queensland Parks notes that bookings from late July into early September are managed differently by the event organiser. Walking and creek country#

The Amamoor Creek hiking trail starts from the campground and is a 2.5km, class 4 circuit for which the land manager suggests about an hour. Other rainforest walks and swimming holes are associated with Amama day-use area and Cedar Grove, not automatically with the campground itself. Keep those locations distinct when planning the day.

Creeks are natural and unsupervised. Flow, depth and water quality change after rain, so check conditions and supervise children rather than treating a visible pool as a maintained swimming area.

Public opinion specific to Amamoor Creek is relatively sparse. A Camping Australia listing describes large, flat, shaded grassy choices and basic cold-shower facilities. Older Caravaners Forum details similarly emphasise the open layout and suitability for varied rigs.

Because those reports are older and event periods can transform the atmosphere, use them only for the enduring layout and forest character—not for current rules or conditions.

Booking Amamoor Creek#

Camping permits are required. Outside the event-managed period, book through the Queensland Parks service. Check-in is after 2pm and check-out is before 11am. Confirm whether the Muster arrangements apply to the intended dates before travelling.
