Pebbly Beach delivers adventure, beach immersion and separation from ordinary road access. It is for experienced high-clearance 4WD campers who can plan around tides and carry all water. It is emphatically not a spontaneous AWD trip, a large-caravan destination or a good choice when a fixed arrival time cannot flex around the creek crossing.
Best site: choose a zone before a number#
The official layout maps sites 1–73 in a long coastal-and-inland arrangement and distinguishes tent-only from medium sites up to 4.6m. Toilets sit within the campground, but the map does not certify shade, privacy, wind exposure or a water view from any number.

The crossing is the arrival plan#
From the Pacific Highway take McPhillips Road about 39km south of Grafton or 47km north of Coffs Harbour. After roughly 5.8km, turn left on Barcoongere Way and follow signs. The remaining route combines unsealed road, dune track, beach and the Station Creek saltwater crossing.
NPWS requires a high-clearance 4WD and low tide. Check the relevant tide, rainfall, Forestry Corporation closures, Live Traffic and the current NPWS alert. Plan a generous crossing window around low tide, not an arrival exactly at it. If water depth, flow or beach conditions are outside your experience, wait or turn back; a booking is not a reason to force the crossing.
After the crossing, follow the formed access to your booked number, inspect the surface and overhead hazards before positioning, and keep vehicle movement within designated tracks. Check-in is 2pm and checkout 10am, so the tide window and booking window both matter. Download everything before leaving service; reception is limited.
Self-sufficiency and rules#
There are marked, unpowered sites and non-flush toilets. There is no water, no shower and no power. Carry drinking and cooking water plus contingency for a delayed outbound crossing. Firewood can be bought at camp or brought in, but fires remain subject to bans and site rules. Pets are prohibited, and the $8 daily vehicle-entry charge is additional to camping fees.
Small caravans and trailers are accepted only when towed by a high-clearance 4WD; large caravans are not suitable. That combination makes equipment eligibility inseparable from access capability.
Beach reality and a worthwhile day#
Pebbly Beach is unpatrolled and NPWS warns of rips, sudden drop-offs and unexpected large waves. Red Rock South is the closest patrolled beach. Families should plan shore play, fishing or walking as the dependable activities and treat swimming as conditional on current patrolled conditions, not on how calm the bay looks.
For a walking day, start the signed Freshwater track from camp and use it as an out-and-back toward Freshwater Beach. Confirm current track status and distance on the official page, carry water, and turn around early enough to preserve your departure tide plan. Do not let a long walk consume the safe crossing window.

Anycamp reports and an independent 4WD trip video emphasise that the tide and creek crossing define the trip, while public discussions praise the beach setting and family-camping atmosphere. An independent five-night report recommends using the booking map to avoid busier clusters. Those are useful site-selection cues, not evidence that a particular crossing is safe or a particular pitch is quiet. Rainfall and the actual tide remain controlling.
