Paddle Bay, South Molle Island

Paddle Bay is for campers who want a boat-access island escape, rainforest shade and walking from a small sandy bay. It rewards careful logistics with a genuine sense of separation from the mainland. It is a poor match for anyone who wants to drive to camp, bring unlimited water, rely on reception, avoid tide planning or use wheeled accessibility facilities.

The decision in one minute#

There is no numbered best site#

QPWS describes a well-shaded open sandy site backed by rainforest and overlooking Daydream Island. The permit covers an open area with no separately defined pitches and a total maximum of 12 people. That means “best” is an arrival decision:

• For weather margin, choose stable sand above the recent high-tide and storm-debris line without pushing into vegetation.
• For sleep, move away from the shared picnic shelter and toilet path while keeping the access route clear.
• For a group, keep all tents compact enough that another permitted party, the walking connection and emergency access are not blocked.
• For hammock or tree-dependent gear, do not assume rainforest trees may be used; bring a ground-supported shelter unless QPWS confirms otherwise.

The South Molle Island map shows Paddle Bay on the island's western side with a walking/shared-trail network behind it. It does not show micro-pitch boundaries, tide height, drainage or tent-to-toilet distances. There are no wheelchair-accessible facilities in the park.

Access: solve the return before the outbound trip#

Paddle Bay is about 6km east-north-east of Shute Harbour. Arrange the transfer before booking camp; some commercial operators carry campers from Shute Harbour or Airlie Beach, while private boaters must handle Whitsunday navigation, weather and tide themselves. QPWS says the bay is reachable by boat at mid to high tide and also from the island walking track.

The South Molle Island jetty is closed because of cyclone damage through 31 December 2026. Do not plan to arrive at the resort jetty and improvise a transfer. Confirm that the operator will land directly at Paddle Bay, the luggage allowance, the safe pickup window and the cancellation plan for wind or swell. The correct fallback is a mainland or alternative island booking, not demanding a landing in unsafe conditions.

Arrival and first hour#

1. Keep the booking tag, transfer contact and weather plan offline; reception is limited or poor.
2. Confirm the skipper's pickup time and exact beach meeting point before the boat leaves.
3. Unload above the wash zone without scattering food or small items along the beach.
4. Identify the legal open camping area, non-flush toilet, picnic shelter and walking-track connection.
5. Inspect sand firmness, drainage, overhead branches and recent tide debris before pitching.
6. Set out drinking water, a fuel stove, lighting and sealed rubbish/food storage.
7. Check the tide needed for the walking connection and the next day's boat landing.

Check-in is after 2pm and checkout before 11am, but the safe boat window controls the actual transfer. There is no staffed reception and no vehicle to retrieve a forgotten water container.

Booking, cost and self-sufficiency#

Book and display a QPWS camping permit. The statewide fee checked on 1 October 2026 is $7.75 per person per night or $31 per family per night; the final checkout quote controls. Boat transfer, private-vessel fuel, parking and any commercial luggage charge are separate costs.

Facilities are a non-flush toilet, picnic tables and a shelter. There is no listed drinking water, shower, power or rubbish service. Bring every litre of drinking/cooking water, rubbish bags, insect repellent, sun protection, first aid and an extra weather day of essential medication. Open fires and ash-producing stoves are prohibited on national park islands; use a gas or liquid-fuel stove. Generators are prohibited. Make gear pest-free before departure.

A worthwhile day without missing the tide#

Start with the Bauer Bay–Paddle Bay Class 2 track, which the official map describes as hard-surfaced with a gentle rise and few steps. All other mapped walks are Class 3—rough, sometimes steep and with steps. The map says to allow four hours return for long walks and two hours return for long rides; those are planning envelopes, not a promise for a particular route.

The shoreline connection to the rest of the tracks is tide-dependent, and Mid Molle can be reached only within two hours either side of low tide. Before a long walk, identify the exact turnaround that protects the route back to camp. Snorkelling, swimming and paddling depend on current wind, tide, marine-stinger and crocodile advice; never infer safe water from a calm photograph.

What campers say#

Public first-hand evidence specific to the Paddle Bay campground is unusually sparse. Searches on 1 October 2026 covered Google review results, Reddit, boating forums, camping directories and trip reports.

• No two independent recent reports supported a recurring claim about toilet condition, insects, noise, reception or the best part of the open area.
• General South Molle accounts praise the walking network and island views, but they do not establish Paddle Bay landing conditions or current trail access.
• The lack of reports is not evidence of solitude. The permit allows up to 12 people and open-area sharing remains possible.

Alternatives#

• Sandy Bay, South Molle Island has a longer sandy beach, toilet, picnic tables and mooring points, making it the stronger South Molle comparison for beachcombing and boat handling; it shares poor reception and no-fire rules.
• Cockatoo Beach sits on North Molle with forest-edge sites facing neighbouring islands; choose it for a different island position, not for easier mainland logistics.
• Planton Island offers a more isolated small-island experience but lacks South Molle's walking network.

Recheck wind, tide, transfer, jetty alert, trail status and campsite availability with QPWS and the operator. Landing conditions and the exact open-area footprint remain volatile and must be settled before departure.
