Kambuwal camping area

Kambuwal camping area is Girraween's smaller-scale option among trees and granite boulders, 300m from the visitor information building on Pyramids Road. It combines conventional-vehicle access with semi-shaded tent and small-rig places, making it more intimate than an open caravan field but less convenient than a powered holiday park.

There are no powered sites, installed showers, drinking water, bins or mobile reception. Bring potable water and expect hard decomposed-granite ground mixed with dirt and grass. Kambuwal works best for modest tents, camper trailers and small caravans whose occupants want quick access to Girraween's walks.

Tent versus trailer inventory#

Queensland Parks lists 13 unnumbered tent sites in open or semi-shaded areas. Some allow parking on the site; at others the vehicle stays nearby. The eight trailer sites suit camper trailers or small caravans and mix semi-shade with sunnier places that can be better for solar charging.

The booking secures the relevant inventory, but individual places are first come within that area. Check the setup dimensions and do not assume a large caravan will fit: the official campground overview directs larger caravans and motorhomes toward Terrawambella.

For mixed groups, book to the least flexible vehicle rather than expecting adjacent tent and trailer places. Unnumbered allocation makes an early daylight arrival useful for understanding where vehicles may park without blocking access. A semi-shaded description also does not mean every site will shade solar panels or a tent all day; pack for both sun and cold.

Access and campsite conditions#

Kambuwal is reached by conventional vehicle. From the New England Highway near Wyberba, Pyramids Road provides the western approach; Queensland Parks also publishes a northern approach via Eukey and Breens roads. Save the official directions offline because coverage is unavailable.

Granite ground can be firm for pegs, and temperatures in the Granite Belt can fall sharply. Pack suitable pegs, warm bedding, insect repellent and a fuel stove for wet weather. Parts of Kambuwal may close for regeneration, so a previously preferred area may not be available.

Water, showers, fires and rubbish#

Facilities include toilets, accessible toilet and shower cubicles, unfiltered water and selected picnic tables and fire rings. The cubicles are BYO shower and water; there is no installed shower. Queensland Parks says the tap water is not suitable for drinking and should be treated even for other uses. Bring enough potable water.

Fires are conditional. Use provided rings where available or an enclosed portable fire stove raised off the ground, bring clean firewood and kindling, and never collect wood in the park. Generators are prohibited and all rubbish and cooled ash must leave with you.

The accessible toilet and shower cubicle improve basic usability, but Queensland Parks cautions that assistance may still be required. Anyone depending on accessibility features should compare the official detail with their equipment before booking. Carrying a small water reserve separately from general camp water also protects drinking supply if drought restrictions tighten or a tap becomes unavailable.

As verified on 26 September 2026, Girraween has a drought alert through 6 October, a swimming prohibition in Bald Rock Creek through 31 December, and reduced camping capacity scheduled from 6 October through 31 December. Check alerts again before travel because dates and water measures can change.

What campers say#

A recent first-person Girraween campground comparison favours Kambuwal's bush and granite setting, relatively flat semi-shaded sites and clean toilets. It also notes that some sites are close together and many tent places do not accept a car beside the tent. That aligns with the official layout but remains one traveller's assessment.

Treat route and site comments as suggestions, not permission to climb or camp outside designated areas. Public exact-site reviews remain limited, so the strongest practical distinction is the official tent-versus-trailer inventory.
