Burrum Point camping area

Burrum Point camping area has 13 numbered sandy sites behind the foredunes in the Woodgate section of Burrum Coast National Park. A short walk reaches the Gregory and Burrum rivers, making this a strong base for fishing, paddling and boating. The trade-off is specialised access: a high-clearance 4WD and, if towing, an off-road camper trailer suited to sand.

Sites and suitable vehicles#

Sites are allocated when booking, so compare the official campground map with the live inventory. All have a sandy surface, but shade, manoeuvring room and distance to the amenities differ. Keep tents and vehicles within the booked site to protect the fragile dunes.

The campground map also helps identify the amenities and beach paths before arrival. Choose for the actual trailer length and group, not simply the first available number, and leave shared paths unobstructed. Sand tracked into tents and vehicles is inevitable, so a mat and enclosed food storage help.

Queensland Parks supports tents beside vehicles and off-road camper trailers. It does not recommend AWD or low-clearance vehicles, ordinary trailers, boats on unsuitable trailers, caravans, campervans, motorhomes or buses. A site appearing in the booking system does not make an incompatible setup safe.

Sandy 4WD access#

Approach through Woodgate, following Burrum Point Road and the signed park track. Sand depth changes with weather and traffic, while wet conditions can bring local flooding. Check the official Burrum Point page, park alerts and tides before departure.

Carry recovery boards, a shovel, compressor and recovery points appropriate to the vehicle. Use tyre pressures suitable for the load and vehicle, and avoid arriving after dark. If towing, confirm the trailer's clearance and turning room before committing to the track.

Facilities and camp rules#

Facilities include flushing toilets, cold showers and water taps. Bring all drinking water and avoid using soap or an external shower where runoff can enter the surrounding environment. There are no powered sites or rubbish bins, so pack a fuel stove, quiet battery power and containers for all waste.

Campfires and generators are prohibited. That rule applies even if an old fire scar remains. Mobile reception is variable and may be better near the beach, so save permits and maps offline. Display the booking number on the camping tag or tent as directed.

What campers say#

Public feedback is relatively sparse and largely predates the current closure. A detailed National Park Odyssey report describes a peaceful atmosphere, useful amenities and a sandy, sometimes narrow approach. A Campedia review page similarly highlights beach access and soft sand, while warning that caravans are unsuitable.

The consistent planning lesson is that the short distance from Woodgate does not make the final track conventional-vehicle access. Reports of a quiet camp and easy beach access are helpful context, but road surface, amenity condition and site shade can all change. Current Queensland Parks rules and alerts take priority.

Rivers, beach and booking#

Paddlers can launch a canoe or kayak for the Burrum River and adjacent Great Sandy Marine Park when conditions suit. Fishing and boating are popular, and the Melaleuca Circuit offers a short forest walk. Follow marine-zone, fishing and water-safety rules; the campground's proximity to water is not a guarantee of safe swimming.
