Beach camping zone 1 - Govi and Wongai

Zone 1 is for campers who want freedom, beach proximity and a self-sufficient 4WD camp near K'gari's southern lakes. It is not the right choice for a first sand-driving experiment, families relying on a wongari-deterrent fence, or anyone expecting toilets, water, showers, bins, power or dependable reception.

The decision in one minute#

First resolve the identity trap#

The zone 1 visitor page covers Govi and Wongai open camping between Dilli Village and Eurong. It is unfenced and has no defined numbered pitches. Wongai camping area (fenced) is a different, separately booked nine-site campground south of Eurong. A permit for one is not a permit for the other.

QPWS publishes no pitch plan or durable Govi-versus-Wongai inventory. Choose within the signs and booking boundary, then reject any patch that sits in a vehicle line, dune vegetation, soft exit, drainage hollow or recent tide/debris reach. For less traffic exposure, look behind the foredune without driving over vegetation; for family sightlines, keep the living area open enough to supervise children. Shade, privacy and wind change by the actual opening and cannot be promised from the zone name.

Access and the turn-back decision#

Zone 1 begins north of Dilli Village, which QPWS places 25.3km north of Hook Point. A high-clearance 4WD with low range is required; off-road camper trailers are accepted. The Eastern Beach scenic drive is usable only two hours either side of low tide.

From Inskip Point, reduce tyre pressure, take the 10–15 minute Mantaray barge to Hook Point and travel north with a large tide and daylight margin. A River Heads arrival requires a fixed-time western barge plus verified inland tracks. Carry the separate vehicle permit, camping permit and barge booking. Severe erosion alerts apply to the Inskip landing approaches through January 2027. If the landing, creek crossing, beach exit or soft sand exceeds the vehicle or driver's ability, wait safely or turn back—do not sacrifice the exit window to reach a preferred patch.

Arrival and first hour#

1. Enter after 2pm and confirm the booking is zone 1, not fenced Wongai.
2. Follow signs to Govi or Wongai and stay within the legal camping boundary.
3. Stop before committing a trailer; walk the intended line and identify a nose-first exit.
4. Check sand firmness, tide/debris evidence, drainage, branches, wind exposure and passing-vehicle separation.
5. Set up the portable toilet, hand-washing water and rubbish system before tents spread out.
6. Lock food, bait, fish, rubbish and scented items in secure storage; never keep them in a tent.
7. Display the permit tag and store tomorrow's tides, alerts and emergency information offline.

There is no staffed check-in. Checkout is before 11am, but departure also needs a safe beach window.

Cost, equipment and family reality#

The booking page lists open camping for tents, walk-ins and off-road camper trailers, with up to five vehicles per permit subject to the booked party. State camping fees checked on 1 October 2026 are $7.75 per person per night or $31 per family per night. Add the K'gari vehicle permit—currently $61.80 for one month or less—and barge fare.

There are no toilets or other facilities. Bring a portable toilet, all water, rubbish storage, stove, sand recovery gear, first aid, insect protection and offline navigation. Open fires are prohibited. A generator under 65dB(A)/2.0kVA may run only 9am–9pm. Mobile coverage is intermittent.

This zone is unfenced. QPWS recommends fenced camps for families with children; outside a fence, keep children within arm's reach, walk in groups, carry a long safety stick and never run from a wongari. The ocean is also a vehicle corridor with strong surf, marine-stinger and crocodile warnings—not a default swimming beach.

A worthwhile day with a protected return window#

The logical day is the Southern Lakes scenic drive to Lake Boomanjin and Lake Birrabeen day-use areas. Confirm that the inland route and lake access are open, leave enough fuel and daylight for slow sand travel, and set a turnaround that reaches camp before the eastern-beach window deteriorates. Use official lake safety signs; never transfer “freshwater lake” into a blanket swimming promise.

What campers say#

Area-specific public opinion is sparse. Searches on 1 October 2026 covered Reddit, Tripadvisor discussions, public Facebook results and camping guides.

• Whole-of-K'gari travellers value beach-camp freedom but repeatedly centre tide and sand-driving competence; that broad pattern supports preparation, not a preferred Govi pitch.
• No two independent recent reports distinguish Govi from Wongai on shade, noise, ground or reception.
• Public photos and guide summaries cannot establish today's traffic line or erosion. Inspect the opening on arrival.

Alternatives#

• Wongai fenced camping area is the direct alternative for families who value a wongari-deterrent fence and numbered equipment categories; it remains zero-facility.
• Lake Boomanjin camping area shifts the trip inland toward a lake and fenced setting, but its own access, facilities and alerts must be checked.
• Beach camping zone 2 keeps the open-beach experience farther north and nearer Lake Wabby; it does not remove tide, toilet or wongari obligations.

Recheck tides, barge, permits, conditions report, fires and park alerts immediately before travel. Legal openings, sand firmness, exposure and neighbour density are material arrival-day unknowns.
