Wongai camping area (fenced)

Wongai is for campers who want a fenced family base near Eurong, beach access and a proper K'gari 4WD trip without campground comforts. The wongari-deterrent fence reduces one risk; it does not turn the site into a holiday park or remove the need for close child supervision. Choose somewhere else if you need toilets, showers, tap water, power, reliable phone service or 2WD access.

Choose by equipment, then ask about the unknowns#

The current booking page lists sites 1, 4 and 8 in the off-road camper-trailer category, each for up to eight people. Sites 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 are tent sites for up to four people. One vehicle is allowed per permit. A tent-site booking is not permission to squeeze in a trailer.

QPWS describes six tent sites and three trailer sites, all numbered, on sand. Its linked 1.4MB campground plan returned a 410 error when checked on 1 October 2026. That leaves site dimensions, shade, separation, parking position and exact carry distance unresolved. Use the booking diagram if it appears at checkout or call 13 QGOV (13 74 68) before paying when one of those details decides the trip. On arrival, inspect sand firmness, drainage, branches and exit clearance before levelling a trailer or pegging a tent.

Access is a tide plan, not a kilometre estimate#

The campground sits behind the eastern foredune just over 2km south of Eurong. QPWS requires a high-clearance 4WD with low range; off-road trailers only. The Eastern Beach scenic drive is available only two hours either side of low tide.

From Inskip Point, lower tyre pressures before the beach, take the 10–15 minute Mantaray barge to Hook Point, then travel north in the safe tide window. From River Heads, a booked barge reaches Wanggoolba Creek in 30–45 minutes or Kingfisher Bay in 50–60 minutes; the inland route still requires current track confirmation. Buy the vehicle access permit, save the conditions report offline and leave enough margin to turn back before a washout, creek crossing or soft exit becomes unsafe. Current alerts include severe erosion at the Inskip landing approaches through January 2027.

Arrival and first hour#

1. Reach the signed entrance after 2pm but well inside the tide and daylight plan.
2. Shut every wongari-deterrent gate behind you; the fence works only when gates remain closed.
3. Confirm the booked number and equipment category before unloading.
4. Inspect the sand pad, overhanging branches, drainage, fence clearance and a nose-first exit.
5. Set up the portable toilet and hand-washing water before dark.
6. Secure food, bait, rubbish and scented items in the vehicle or other lockable storage—never in the tent.
7. Display the permit tag and download tomorrow's tide and route information while any connection remains.

There is no published staffed reception. Check-in is after 2pm and checkout before 11am.

Costs and the zero-facility setup#

QPWS camping fees checked on 1 October 2026 are $7.75 per person per night or $31 per family per night; children under five camp free within the stated family rules. Treat the final quote as authoritative. A K'gari vehicle permit is separate—currently $61.80 for one month or less—and the commercial barge fare is another cost.

There are no toilets, water taps, showers, bins or power. Bring a portable toilet, all drinking and washing water, a gas or fuel stove, rubbish capacity, sand pegs, insect protection, first aid and redundant lighting. QPWS points to Eurong for water and to the disposal facility south of Cornwells for portable-toilet waste; plan both stops before camp. Open fires are prohibited. Generators under 65dB(A)/2.0kVA may run only 9am–9pm. General phone coverage is unavailable; QPWS identifies a public phone at Eurong.

A worthwhile day without dangerous assumptions#

Use Wongai as a tide-aware base for a beach walk, fishing and the Lake Wabby walk north of camp. QPWS had planned Lake Wabby track maintenance through 9 November 2026, so verify the current alert before building the day around it. The ocean beach is a vehicle corridor with strong surf, marine stingers and possible crocodiles; do not treat “close to the beach” as a swimming recommendation. For freshwater swimming, use only an open official lake access and follow its own warnings.

What campers say#

Public first-hand evidence specific to fenced Wongai is sparse. Searches on 1 October 2026 covered Reddit, public Facebook results, camping guides and review listings; they did not yield two independent recent site-level reports.

• Broader K'gari discussions consistently value fenced areas for trips with children, matching QPWS guidance, but they do not rank Wongai's numbered sites.
• Public guides emphasise eastern-beach freedom and proximity to lakes; those whole-island impressions do not establish sand firmness, quiet or mobile reception here.
• No defensible recurring traveller theme was found for shade, generator noise or the best trailer number. Use the equipment categories and on-arrival inspection instead.

Alternatives that solve a real mismatch#

• One Tree fenced camping area is 800m north of Eurong and has a usable numbered-site map; choose it when known dimensions matter more than Wongai's position south of town.
• Dundubara camping area is the stronger comfort comparison because it has toilets, showers and treated water, but it is much farther north and still requires 4WD/tide planning.
• Beach camping zone 1 offers open, unfenced camping between Dilli Village and Eurong. It provides more flexible open space but is a poor substitute for families relying on the fence.

Recheck the booking category, tide, conditions report, alerts and barge schedule immediately before travel. Current sand, shade and site separation remain material unknowns until the missing map is restored or QPWS confirms them.
