Adder Rock Campground

Plan an Adder Rock Campground stay with site sizes, facilities, beach access, ferry planning, arrival rules, cancellations and practical camper insights.

Adder Rock Campground is a large, shady campground near the northern shore of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). Native tea tree and pandanus separate much of the camping area from the beach, while Point Lookout shops, meals and surf beaches remain close enough for an easy island base.

The main choice is not simply powered versus unpowered. Tent sites, van sites and powered positions have different dimensions, and locations within this broad campground vary in shade, walking distance to amenities and proximity to the beach.

Getting there and checking in#

Address: East Coast Road, Point Lookout QLD 4183

Adder Rock is accessible by sealed road and the official campground page lists it as suitable for 2WD vehicles. A 4WD permit is only relevant if you intend to drive on approved island beaches; it is not required to reach this campground.

Vehicles travel from Cleveland on the SeaLink ferry to Dunwich. The campground operator's travel guidance says vehicle-ferry bookings are essential, while SeaLink lists the crossing at about 45 minutes. Reserve both the campsite and vehicle crossing before committing to peak dates.

Camping check-in is 11am and check-out is 10am. Bring the booking number or confirmation so staff can issue the camping tag and amenities access card. Tags and cards are not automatically posted. Only one vehicle is permitted on each site.

Choosing the right site#

The operator currently lists:

  • 107 unpowered tent sites, each limited to a 6m x 6m footprint;
  • 11 unpowered van or trailer sites; and
  • 35 powered sites, ranging from 6m x 6m to 9m x 10m.

Surfaces are grass or sand. Measure the entire setup—including drawbar, awning, ropes and attachments—and confirm an appropriate category rather than assuming a powered site will fit every caravan. The booking limit is four adults, or two adults with up to three children or infants, and a camping permit can cover no more than 30 days.

Cabins and 12 Eco Island Tents are also advertised, but these are not substitutes for ordinary camping inventory when monitoring a cancellation.

Facilities, beach and practical rules#

Facilities include potable water, toilets, timed hot showers, a coin-operated laundry and undercover barbecue areas. There are no public-use fridges. Adder Rock does not have a chemical-toilet dump point; Minjerribah Camping directs campers to the facility at Amity Point.

The campground has direct beach access. The operator says Adder Rock's beach is patrolled during Queensland school holidays, so do not assume patrols operate outside those periods. Check conditions and swim only where and when lifesavers are present.

Mobile coverage is described as some coverage, with no campground Wi-Fi. Open fires, generators and dogs are prohibited, and all Minjerribah Camping properties are smoke-free. Nearby conveniences include a shop, cafes, restaurants, bowls club and service station.

What campers say#

Recurring themes across Tripadvisor and a public Reddit camping discussion add practical context:

  • Shade, birdlife and the relaxed bush setting are common reasons campers choose Adder Rock.
  • Beach access and the convenience store nearby are repeatedly valued, although the shop-side area may feel less secluded than positions deeper in the campground.
  • Experiences of the amenities are mixed: many guests report clean facilities, while others find the timed showers or capacity less comfortable when the campground is busy.
  • The campground is spread out, so a quiet or roomy-looking position may involve a longer walk to showers and barbecues.
  • Families and groups value the space and access, but atmosphere and noise can change markedly during school holidays.

These are traveller-reported patterns, not guarantees about cleanliness, quietness, wildlife or a particular allocation.

Booking, changes and cancellations#

Book through the official booking portal. The full amount is payable when booking. Site fees include the first two adults, with any additional eligible guests charged at the current rate.

Under the current terms, a change made at least seven days before arrival costs $20; changes 1–6 days before arrival cost $30, and changes cannot be made within 24 hours. A cancellation made at least seven days before arrival produces a credit valid for 12 months, less a $30 fee, rather than a cash refund. The terms separately list a $30 cancellation fee at 1–6 days but do not clearly state whether the remaining balance becomes credit, so confirm that outcome before relying on it. With less than 24 hours' notice, no refund or credit is offered. Early departures and unused nights are not credited.

Can't get a booking?#

Adder Rock's site categories are not interchangeable: a 6m tent cancellation may not suit a van, and powered inventory is much smaller than the unpowered area. If the right category is sold out, set up a free CampWatch alert and we'll text when matching availability returns. No app, no account — just your phone number.
