Murray Falls

Murray Falls is for campers who want an easy-to-reach grassy base, cold showers and a short rainforest-and-waterfall outing without numbered-site formality. It suits tents, caravans, camper trailers, campervans, motorhomes and groups. It is a poor match for anyone who needs a reserved pitch, reliable phone service, hot showers or a campground where rainfall and ground choice require no judgement.

The three decisions that matter#

Choosing ground in an open camping area#

The official map shows the camping polygon beside the access road, with the toilet/shower building toward the falls end and the day-use barbecues in the separate riverside precinct. It does not allocate pitches or show shade by season.

• Shorter amenity walk: inspect the campground end nearer the toilet and shower, accepting more passing foot traffic.
• Large rig or group: use only a position where the vehicle, drawbar, awning and circulation fit inside the legal grass area without blocking others.
• Rain forecast: a single Anycamp report described water running through camp during heavy rain. It is an anecdote, but the consequence is sensible: inspect low channels and choose naturally draining ground rather than relying on appearance from the road.
• Accessibility: the toilets are officially wheelchair accessible, but QPWS does not promise an accessible campsite or continuous firm route. Confirm the ground-to-amenity path before relying on it.

Because the area is unallocated, booking capacity is not evidence that your preferred patch will remain vacant.

Booking, cost and permits#

Obtain the camping permit and pay the current fee before arrival. The live Murray Falls checkout controls the total, party details and availability; advance booking is recommended for holiday periods. Display the booking tag as required.

There is no separate numbered-site price to compare. Budget for potable water, fuel, clean firewood and the extra travel needed if you forget supplies—mobile service is not available at camp.

Road approach and first hour#

From Cardwell, QPWS directs visitors 21km north to Bilyana, then west for 20km. The campground is accessible by conventional vehicle. No staffed reception is listed.

1. Download the permit, map, alerts and return directions while you have service.
2. Enter after 2pm and identify the campground rather than stopping in the day-use area.
3. Walk candidate ground before unhitching; check slope, drainage, overhead branches and the route to the amenities.
4. Keep roads and shared circulation clear.
5. Locate the cold shower, toilet, rubbish point, fire ring and evacuation direction.
6. Save a turn-back option if weather or ground conditions are worse than expected.

QPWS says the nearest reliable mobile service is 8.4km away at Murray River Upper State School. Do not make a campsite phone call part of the arrival plan.

Facilities, comfort and rules#

Facilities include wheelchair-accessible flush toilets, a cold shower, taps, picnic tables, rubbish bins, individual fire rings and two wood barbecues in the day-use area. QPWS tells campers to bring drinking water, so the taps are not a potable-water plan.

Fires are permitted only in provided rings when bans do not apply. Bring clean firewood; collecting it in the park is prohibited. Generators may run only 9am–12pm, below 65dB(A) measured at 7m. Carry a fuel stove, insect repellent and lighting.

The falls and swimming hole are natural water. QPWS carries crocodile and cassowary warnings for the park; check current safety guidance and supervise children rather than treating a popular swimming report as a guarantee.

A worthwhile day from camp#

Walk the Yalgay Ginja Bulumi track from Murray Falls. QPWS rates it Grade 3, 1.8km return and suggests one hour. It leads through open forest and rainforest to a constructed lookout over the falls, returning by the same track. The walk is not wheelchair accessible. Start early in heat, stay behind barriers and reassess if rain raises river or track risk.

What campers say#

Anycamp lists seven reviews, Tripadvisor has a broader attraction-review sample, and two public travel-forum threads were checked.

• Falls sound, the short lookout walk and a peaceful grassy camp recur across independent sources.
• Clean toilets and a short walk to the swimming area appear in multiple reports, but cleanliness varies by visit and is not promised.
• One rain-night report described water flowing through parts of camp. Treat it as an isolated warning to inspect drainage, not a claim that the whole campground floods.
• Tripadvisor includes many day visitors who did not camp, so its scenery sentiment is not used to establish amenities or pitch quality.

Alternatives: when another campground is a better fit#

• Choose Jourama Falls for a conventional-vehicle camp with cold shower, flush toilets and gas barbecues where fires and generators are prohibited. Check the current lookout-track works before booking.
• Choose Big Crystal Creek for conventional-vehicle access, cold showers and a nearby swimming area. Its smaller internal road makes large caravans and buses a poorer fit.

Recheck before you go#

Confirm the live fee, permit, park alerts, fire conditions, generator need, forecast and road status. Ask QPWS through the official page if a long rig, accessibility requirement or group footprint depends on a particular part of the unallocated grass.
