Munall camping area

Munall rewards campers who want forest quiet and short walks more than campground comforts. Its 16 numbered dirt sites sit around Mimosa Creek, each with a fire ring and log seat. The trade-off is a narrow gravel approach, no drinking water, no showers, no bins, no generators and no phone service at camp.

It suits tents, rooftop tents and appropriately sized camper trailers. It does not suit caravans or heavy trailers, even if a booking search appears to show space.

Choose the site for the manoeuvre you can make#

Sites 2, 6, 8 and 13-16 are reverse-in trailer sites. The internal road is mostly one-way on the map, so do not count on circling back against traffic. Dimensions control equipment fit; the plan does not prove pitch-level shade or quiet.

Arrival: the last 8km changes the trip#

Munall is 8km beyond Yaddamen Dhina day-use area. QPWS permits cautious 2WD access, but describes this section as narrow, winding and unsealed. The correct decision is based on current road and weather, not the word “2WD” alone. If the surface or visibility is beyond the driver, turn back at Yaddamen Dhina while there is still a defined fallback.

Arrive after 2pm, follow the one-way arrows, find the reserved number and check its dimensions before unhitching. Locate the non-flush toilet, fire ring and exit, then position the vehicle without blocking the loop. Two vehicles and six people are the published maximum at every site. Checkout is by 11am.

The 4WD Loop Road beyond Munall is a separate issue and was closed until 1 November 2026 when checked. A closed loop does not automatically close Munall, but it removes one driving plan; read the exact park alert before travel.

Pack as a dry, offline camp#

Drinking water is not supplied. Bring enough for drinking, cooking, washing and extinguishing a fire, plus a delay margin. Pack a sealed animal-resistant food container, sturdy rubbish bags and insect repellent. There are no bins and mobile coverage is unavailable at camp; QPWS notes only variable coverage at Yaddamen Dhina and suggests considering a satellite phone.

Use the site's ring only when fire conditions allow. Bring clean milled firewood, never collect it, and carry a gas or fuel stove. Dogs and drones are prohibited. Toilets are described as wheelchair accessible with assistance, which is not a promise that every dirt pitch and path is independently accessible; ask QPWS about the current route for a specific mobility need.

A worthwhile day without the closed 4WD loop#

The map places the Goon Goon Dhina circuit (2.5km) from the campground and Mook Mook (2.4km return) from the lower side of the camp loop. Choose one in the cooler part of the day, take water and use the signed track rather than cutting across sites. Gudda Gumoo lookout and gorge is 8km away by road; check its current access before making it the second activity.

This gives a real fallback if the 4WD loop is closed: a walking day can still work without treating a seasonal road closure as a failed trip.

What campers say#

Tripadvisor park reviews repeatedly describe generous, separated sites, fire rings and a manageable road for some camper trailers. They also repeat the need to carry water and wood. A recent Queensland and Beyond guide highlights that site 10's apparent “path” is part of the drive-through footprint.

Road opinions conflict: some towed in easily, while other reports describe washed-out conditions after rain. That is exactly why dated anecdotes cannot override QPWS's no-caravan/heavy-trailer rule or a current closure. Use reviews for atmosphere and setup clues, not access permission.

Alternatives worth comparing#

• Dingo Caravan Park is the better comfort fallback for travellers who need easier town services or a caravan-compatible base, but it gives up camping inside Blackdown Tableland.
• Yaddamen Dhina day-use area plus outside-park accommodation suits a cautious 2WD day visit when the final 8km is uncomfortable, but it is not overnight camping in the park.
