Curri Curri is a genuine boat camp: five private-feeling numbered grass sites on Lake Tinaroo, no road access, no toilet, no water point and no generator. It rewards self-contained paddlers and boat crews who want one booked site rather than a shared drive-in campground. It is a mismatch for first-time boat campers, caravans, people who need amenities, or groups that cannot safely move their full load over open water.

The three decisions that matter#

Choosing sites 2–6#

The official site table gives capacity and tent category, while the campground map shows site 2 north of sites 3–6 along the shoreline.

Capacity does not prove that several tents or a large shelter will fit. Keep the booked party and equipment within the chosen site's live conditions.

Booking and complete trip cost#

Book the exact numbered site and pay the current camping fee before departure through the Queensland Parks checkout. Add ramp parking, boat fuel or hire, fishing requirements and the cost of carrying water/sanitation to the trip total. Save the permit, site number and map offline.

The current Danbulla alerts include road works affecting other park roads through October 2026, while Curri Curri remains boat-only. Check alerts anyway because ramp access, fire rules or lake conditions can change without altering the campsite description.

Launch, landing and first hour#

The nearest listed ramps are at Church Street and Black Gully Road in Tinaroo, about 70km or 1.5 hours from Cairns before the water leg.

1. Check wind, storms, lake level, ramp access, daylight and the loaded craft's safe range.
2. Choose the launch before leaving mobile coverage and share a float plan.
3. Save the map and identify the booked number; do not occupy an empty-looking alternative.
4. Approach slowly, inspect water depth, bank condition and a safe place to secure the craft.
5. Tie up before unloading and keep essential water, first aid and communication gear together.
6. Locate legal tent ground, fire ring and a sanitation position that protects the shoreline.

If the booked landing is unsafe for your crew or craft, return to the launch and contact QPWS. Do not improvise a camp at another numbered site.

Self-sufficiency and rules#

The only listed facility is an individual fire ring. Bring all drinking/cooking water, a lawful self-contained toilet plan, food storage, lighting, rubbish containers, insect repellent and an emergency communication option suited to the lake. Mobile coverage is described as generally available, not reliable enough to replace a plan.

Fires are allowed only in the ring when bans do not apply. Bring or buy clean firewood before entering the park; collecting it is prohibited. Generators are not permitted. Domestic animals are not permitted in the protected area.

Swimming, boating, fishing and waterskiing are natural-water activities. Check conditions and current fishing rules, wear appropriate flotation equipment and keep children within a defined shoreline boundary.

A worthwhile paddle with a complete return#

For a predictable outing, a crew based at site 2 can retrace the official 2km line to the Church Street ramp and return, making about 4km on the water. That distance is calculated from QPWS's one-way figure, not a published tour time. Set the turnaround from wind, daylight and the slowest paddler, and shorten or abandon the trip if the return leg could become unsafe.

Sites 3–6 are farther south, but QPWS does not publish their ramp distances. Do not transfer the site-2 estimate to them.

What campers say#

First-hand evidence is sparse. A public Curri Curri canoe-trip video, a regional Lake Tinaroo camping report, public campground-community search and Reddit/Facebook search were attempted.

• The canoe video confirms the boat-camping character and a self-carried setup, but it is one trip, not a current conditions report.
• Regional camping reports consistently distinguish Curri Curri from Danbulla's drive-in camps, but they do not provide an independent sample of individual sites.
• Public searches did not yield two independent recent reports for shade, landing quality, insects or noise. No consensus is claimed.

Alternatives: when another campground is a better fit#

• Choose Kauri Creek for conventional-vehicle or boat access, flush toilets and a shower room where you bring your own shower. Its open area is shared and the current high-water alert reduces capacity through 27 October 2026.
• Choose Fong-On Bay for a large drive-in water-skiing base with many water-access sites. It also sits under the current reduced-capacity alert and is less secluded.

Recheck before launching#

Confirm the exact site, party/tent category, checkout total, ramp and parking status, fire restrictions, lake/weather conditions and alerts. Ask QPWS about landing terrain, current water level or site dimensions when those details decide whether the trip is viable.
