Coongul Creek camping area

Coongul Creek is a remote, unfenced beach camping area on north-western K’gari between Moon Point and Sandy Cape. It can be reached by high-clearance 4WD or boat, and Queensland Parks lists both tents beside vehicles and off-road camper trailers.

The western setting is attractive to self-sufficient families, fishers and travellers seeking distance from the eastern beach corridor. Isolation is the trade-off: there are no facilities, reception is intermittent and the route must be checked rather than assumed.

Camping beside Coongul Creek#

Your permit does not reserve a numbered patch. Choose an established position within the designated area, stay off vegetation and dunes, and assess the actual sand, tide line, creek flow, wind and vehicle separation before unloading. Leave room for changing water levels instead of chasing the closest possible water view.

There are no toilets, showers, taps, bins or picnic tables. Bring a portable toilet, all drinking water, secure food and bait storage, shade, first aid and enough supplies for an unplanned delay. Pack rubbish and toilet waste out to an authorised disposal point.

4WD, trailer and boat access#

The official Coongul Creek booking page specifies high-clearance 4WD and boat access. Inland tracks and western beach stretches can change with weather, traffic and tides, so plan the last leg in daylight and use the live conditions report to choose the route.

Off-road camper trailers are listed, but suitability depends on the complete rig and current sand. Carry a tyre gauge, compressor, shovel and rated recovery equipment, know how to use them, and allow more fuel and time than a road-map distance suggests. Boat arrivals need an independent assessment of weather, tide, landing conditions and safety equipment.

Arrange a camping permit and, if driving, a K’gari vehicle access permit before travel. Save permits, maps and emergency information offline. As checked on 14 September 2026, park alerts included island access and track notices; use the current alert map to determine whether they affect your planned approach.

Fires, generators and wildlife#

Campfires are prohibited. The detailed Queensland Parks booking text permits generators no larger than 2kVA and quieter than 65dB from 9am to 9pm, even though the short facilities summary may omit the generator badge. Recheck the full booking conditions before departure; battery or solar power is the quieter choice.

Coongul Creek is unfenced wongari (dingo) habitat. Secure food, bait and rubbish, never feed wildlife, keep children close and walk in groups. Queensland Parks recommends fenced campgrounds for families with young children. Follow official instructions rather than relying on how many animals previous campers happened to see.

Swimming, paddling, boating and fishing are unsupervised. Shallow-looking water, clear weather or a low tide does not remove marine and creek hazards. Make your own conditions-based decision and supervise children closely.
