Cedar Grove camping area

Cedar Grove camping area is a broad grassy clearing beside Amamoor Creek, framed by red cedars, bunya pines, rainforest and tall open forest. It has no individually marked sites, so it suits campers who value setup flexibility more than the certainty of a numbered bay.

Camping layout and setup#

The open area accommodates tents beside vehicles, caravans, camper trailers, campervans, motorhomes and large groups. The surface is grass. Without fixed sites, spacing and shade depend on who has already arrived, so keep access routes and shared facilities clear rather than spreading into an oversized footprint.

The flexible layout is convenient for a mixed group, but it also means there is no guaranteed boundary or private pad. Set up with room for other bookings, keep noise contained and avoid blocking the walking-track entrances or access to fire rings.

The official Cedar Grove page is the best pre-trip reference for current access, facilities and alerts. Check-in is after 1pm and check-out is by 11am.

Getting there and flood risk#

Cedar Grove is 12km west of Amamoor township along Amamoor Creek Road. The last section is gravel, but QPWS describes it as suitable for conventional vehicles, campervans, motorhomes and tow vehicles with caravans or trailers.

That 2WD classification does not make floodwater safe. Heavy rain can cover creek crossings, and QPWS warns that water rises and falls quickly. If a crossing is flooded, wait it out rather than testing the depth. Check the Amamoor park alerts, local weather and road conditions before departure.

Facilities and supplies#

The campground has toilets, creek-pumped water, fire rings and walking tracks. The water is not potable without treatment and may contain harmful organisms; bring enough drinking and cooking water. There are no bins, no powered sites and no generators.

Pack sealed rubbish storage, insect repellent, lighting and clean firewood if you intend to use a fire ring. Open fires are allowed only in the provided rings when no ban applies. Carrying a fuel stove avoids losing your cooking plan if restrictions change.

Creek-pumped water may still look clear while requiring treatment. Use brought water for drinking and cooking, and treat the tap as a backup for non-potable camp tasks rather than a reason to reduce your supply.

Creek and walks#

The short Rainforest walk loops around the campground beside Amamoor Creek. The longer Cedar Grove hiking trail also begins here, making the campground a useful base for exploring without driving again. Creek depth and water quality vary, especially after rain; there is no lifeguard, so assess conditions carefully.

Dogs are not permitted at Cedar Grove. This is easy to confuse with Amamoor Creek camping area, where dogs are allowed under conditions. The Amamoor camping overview explains the distinction.

What campers say#

Independent Cedar Grove-specific opinion is sparse and mostly older, so it does not support claims about a current crowd or cleanliness consensus.

• A 2022 visit report describes a very large grassed area able to fit vans and tents, with scattered fire rings and flushing toilets.
• That account found the unsealed approach manageable and the creek walk easy, while noting there was no mobile service. These points align with current QPWS information but remain one traveller’s experience.
• Anycamp's community listing shows only a small review base, so use it for photos and individual impressions rather than a reliable consensus.

Booking checklist#
