Beach camping zone 7 covers Wyuna and Burad on K'gari's eastern beach between Dundubara and Indian Head. These are unfenced, no-facility camps for self-sufficient travellers with a suitable 4WD. The payoff is direct beach access and a useful base for the island's northern sights; the cost is exposure, tide-dependent travel and serious wongari safety responsibilities.

Wyuna and Burad are one booking zone#

Your permit is for zone 7 rather than a numbered campsite. Use the official zone map to identify Wyuna and Burad, then choose an established camp above the high-tide line without driving on dunes or vegetation. The two named areas can differ in wind, traffic and available clearings on arrival.

The official campground page should be checked alongside the dated conditions report. Do not assume a favourite camp remains accessible after erosion or storms.

4WD, tides and permits#

A high-clearance 4WD and current K'gari vehicle access permit are required. Beach routes are affected by tides, washouts, creek mouths and traffic. Carry recovery boards, shovel, compressor, tyre gauge, rated recovery points and enough fuel for detours. Save barge, tide and permit details offline.

As of 27 September 2026, the K'gari park page lists multiple live alerts, including severe erosion at the Inskip barge landing tracks and seasonal wongari activity. Conditions change, so treat those dated alerts as a prompt to recheck rather than permanent article facts.

No facilities means full self-sufficiency#

Wyuna and Burad have no toilets, drinking water, showers, bins or power. Bring all water, food, toilet equipment, rubbish storage, first aid and shelter. Toilet waste must be managed under current recreation-area rules and rubbish carried out; never bury or burn waste.

Open fires are prohibited. Use a fuel stove. Generators below 2.0kVA and 65dB may operate only from 9am to 9pm. Mobile reception is intermittent, not an emergency plan.

Wongari safety is central here#

Zone 7 is not protected by a wongari-deterrent fence. QPWS recommends that families with children camp inside a fenced area. Never feed or attract wongari. Keep children within arm's reach, walk in groups, and store food, rubbish, bait, toiletries and scented gear in secure hard-sided containers or a vehicle—not a tent or annex.

Check current K'gari wongari guidance before travel. If safety advice or an alert conflicts with a preferred campsite, move to a fenced alternative.

What campers say#

Zone-7-specific public reviews are sparse. A camping-zone overview and a K'gari beach-camping guide provide limited practical context rather than a robust consensus:

  • Campers choose zone 7 for proximity to Dundubara and Indian Head while retaining an open-beach camp.
  • Wyuna and Burad can feel different depending on wind, beach traffic and how many established clearings remain usable.
  • Sunrise and fishing access are major attractions, balanced by exposure and vehicle noise on the eastern beach.
  • Intermittent reception, zero facilities and an unfenced setting make preparation more important than campsite aesthetics.
  • Travellers repeatedly stress tide planning; a good camp does not compensate for an unsafe travel window.

These are traveller-reported trade-offs. Official conditions and safety advice govern the trip.

Booking zone 7 responsibly#

Book through Queensland Parks and purchase the separate vehicle permit. Check-in is after 2pm and check-out by 11am, but never force beach travel into an unsafe tide or weather window to meet a clock.

CampWatch can monitor supported cancellations. Families seeking a fenced camp should compare Dundubara, Waddy Point or another currently available fenced area rather than treating zone 7 as equivalent.
