Beach camping zone 5 - Maheno and Wahba

Beach camping zone 5 covers the Maheno and Wahba camping areas on K’gari's eastern beach between Eli Creek and The Pinnacles. This is dispersed, unfenced beach camping rather than a numbered site: your booking is for the zone, and the actual established clearing depends on conditions and availability when you arrive.

The setting suits self-sufficient 4WD travellers who value a central eastern-beach base. It does not suit anyone expecting toilets, water, bins, a guaranteed private pitch or the protection of a fenced campground.

Maheno or Wahba: choosing a camp#

Both areas sit behind the foredunes within the mapped zone. Look for an already-established clearing that fits your setup without driving on vegetation. Shelter, sand firmness, vehicle traffic and neighbouring groups can vary from one clearing to the next, so the name alone does not guarantee a quiet or wind-protected camp.

The beach remains a road, not part of the campsite. Keep tents, children and equipment behind the dunes and within the designated area. The official zone 5 booking page is the authority for permitted equipment and current booking conditions.

4WD access, tides and permits#

Access is by high-clearance 4WD along the eastern beach. Plan the ferry or barge, fuel stop and final beach run around a safe tide window, daylight and current track conditions. Creek crossings, washouts, soft sand, pedestrians and aircraft can all change the pace. Avoid driving through seawater and leave enough margin to wait rather than rushing a marginal section.

Off-road camper trailers are listed as suitable, but that is not a promise that every rig or every day's conditions will be manageable. Carry a tyre gauge, compressor, shovel and rated recovery equipment, and know how to use them.

Arrange both the camping permit and the required K’gari vehicle access permit before arrival. Save permits and maps offline because mobile coverage can be intermittent. Check K’gari park alerts and the latest conditions report immediately before travel.

No facilities, fires or fence#

Zone 5 has no toilets, showers, taps, bins or picnic tables. Bring a portable toilet, sufficient drinking water, robust rubbish storage, shade and supplies for delays. Remove all rubbish and toilet waste to an authorised disposal point; do not bury or burn it.

Campfires are prohibited. Queensland Parks permits generators no larger than 2kVA and quieter than 65dB between 9am and 9pm, subject to current conditions. Even within those hours, placing the generator thoughtfully matters in open beach camps.

This is an unfenced camping zone in wongari (dingo) habitat. Queensland Parks recommends fenced campgrounds for families with young children. Keep children close, secure food and rubbish, never feed wildlife and follow every current wongari instruction. The booking check-in time of 2pm does not make an unsafe tide window safe.

What campers say#

Exact Maheno-versus-Wahba comparisons are limited in public discussion. In one public K’gari camping discussion, a past camper remembered the Maheno area positively but also described busy periods, tide timing and wongari moving through an unfenced camp. That is an individual experience, not a current conditions report, but it reinforces the official need to manage food, children and arrival timing carefully.

Book Maheno and Wahba through the Queensland Parks service. Check-in is after 2pm and check-out is before 11am, while tides still determine practical movement times.
