Weipa Camping Ground is a leafy, grassed campground on Albatross Bay in Cape York, with powered sites, unpowered sites and a small number of sought-after beachfront positions. It is a practical stop for travellers heading through the western Cape: there are three amenity blocks, a camp kitchen, pool and laundry, while fuel, groceries, fishing gear and vehicle services are available in Weipa.
The waterfront setting is for sunsets rather than swimming. Crocodiles inhabit the waterways around Weipa, and the campground explicitly advises guests not to enter the sea from the beach.
Getting there#
Address: 11 Kerr Point Road, Weipa QLD 4874
The campground is on Kerr Point Road opposite Weipa Hospital. The operator warns that GPS can direct guests along the wrong dirt road past the rubbish dump and lakes, so use the street address and turn back if navigation sends you away from the signed town route.
Weipa Town Authority places the town just over 800km from Cairns via the Peninsula Developmental Road. Conditions on this long remote route change with weather and roadworks, especially in the wet season. Check QLDTraffic immediately before departure and carry enough fuel, water, food and essential supplies for the conditions rather than relying on an old road report.
Camping check-in is from 12pm and check-out is by 10am. A late check-out to 12pm may be approved in writing for an additional fee, but it is not guaranteed.

Open in Google MapsChoosing a campsite#
The park offers three broad camping choices:
- Powered sites: allocated across the grassy grounds, including shaded positions. Campers have access to all three amenity blocks, the kitchen and laundry.
- General unpowered sites: grassed sites in several parts of the park for tents, camper trailers and caravans.
- Beachfront unpowered sites: a limited number of sites along the Albatross Bay foreshore, chosen for open water views and sunsets rather than beach swimming.
The operator describes most campsites as roughly 10m by 10m, but not every category is that large. Its smaller and medium site descriptions apply equipment limits, including a maximum trailer length of 4.8m for some medium sites. If you have a large caravan, a boat, a long drawbar or multiple vehicles, give reception the complete setup length before paying. Use the official park map to understand the layout, but let the operator allocate a site that actually fits.
The beachfront sites are unpowered and limited. If water views matter more than electricity, request that category specifically; an ordinary unpowered booking does not necessarily place you on the foreshore.
The map also marks some powered sites as 10-amp only and allows one power point per site. Confirm the supply if you need to run caravan air conditioning or other high-draw equipment; a booking labelled “powered” does not prove that every site has the same connection.
Facilities and supplies#
Campers can use:
- three amenity blocks
- an undercover camp kitchen with a fridge/freezer, sink and power points for electric cooking appliances
- a coin-operated laundry
- a saltwater swimming pool
- a children's playground
- an onsite café operating in the late afternoon and evening
- reception assistance with local tours and activities
The campground currently says it does not provide guest internet. Plan around your own mobile service and download maps, booking confirmations and permits before travelling beyond town.
Weipa's shops are within walking distance and include a supermarket, butcher, bakery, newsagent, camping and fishing suppliers. The town also has fuel and vehicle-service options, making the campground a useful place to restock before another remote Cape York leg.
Beach, fishing and crocodile safety#
Do not treat the beach in front of the campground as a swimming beach. The operator says crocodiles are the dominant aquatic predator around Weipa and also warns of jellyfish and other dangerous marine animals. Pets should not enter the water either.
Fishing from local beaches and riverbanks is possible, but stay well back from the water, keep bait and food controlled, and remain alert. The campground notes that crocodile attacks have occurred on fishers along riverbanks and beaches. Use the onsite pool when you want to swim and follow current Crocwise signs and local advice everywhere around the bay.
Pets, fires, generators and noise#
The booking terms anticipate pets at campsites but exclude them from rooms, amenities, the pool area, playground, camp kitchen and café. Guests must accept the park's full pet policy on arrival. Because the website does not publish all eligibility rules, confirm your animal and intended site type with reception before booking.
Campfires and generators are not permitted. The terms also require loud noise—including music, vehicles, fridges and conversation—to stop by 10pm. Plan to cook with gas or electric equipment appropriate for your site and the camp kitchen rather than expecting to use a fire.
Internal roads are shared zones with a published 5km/h limit. Drones are prohibited because the campground sits in a flight path and helicopter tours operate from the premises. Water restrictions also mean boats must be washed at local ramps and vehicles or caravans at the town car wash, not on the campsite.
Rates and booking conditions#
The campground's visible rate table is labelled as valid only until 30 June 2026. That period has passed, so this guide does not repeat those prices as current. Use the live booking quote or contact reception for the rate that applies to your dates and equipment.
Current booking terms say the base rate covers up to two people. Additional campsite guests are charged separately, with different amounts for adults and children. A deposit is required to secure the reservation, the balance is charged on the morning of arrival, and the operator lists a 1% card-payment fee. Read the total carefully before confirming because rates and fees can change.
The current online terms say booking changes and cancellations must be requested in writing at least 72 hours before arrival; the deposit becomes non-refundable inside that window, no-shows forfeit the full reservation, and early departures are not refunded. However, the park's linked 2024 map still says all bookings are non-refundable. Because those first-party documents conflict, save the cancellation wording shown with your live quote and ask reception to confirm it in writing. Travel insurance is worth considering for a remote drive that can be disrupted by weather.
Book through the official Weipa Camping Ground portal or call (07) 4069 7871. The operator identifies May to August as its peak period on its main pages and recommends booking from May to September in its FAQ. Either way, reserve before starting the Cape York drive—particularly for a large caravan or a beachfront unpowered site.
What campers say#
Traveller feedback tends to frame Weipa Camping Ground as a comfortable recovery and resupply stop after Cape York road travel, with the waterfront atmosphere as the memorable extra:
- A recent Cape York camping-group report described the park as busy, praised the pool and noted the convenience of restocking in Weipa. The practical takeaway is to book ahead in the touring season.
- Visitors responding to a public campground post repeatedly mention sunsets, the ocean-edge setting and the pool as highlights for families.
- A detailed independent road-trip review found the shady, grassy park a welcome contrast to the Cape's red dust and would stay again, while noting that travellers without a boat or booked tour may cover the town's main sights relatively quickly.
- Tripadvisor reviews commonly reinforce the sunset, waterfront and facilities themes, though experiences vary with site position and season.
These are traveller opinions, not guarantees about quietness, availability, shade or views. In peak periods, ask what site actually fits your rig and whether a beachfront or powered position is available before paying.
